Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

As I keep saying, we have a complicated setup happening over the next few days. That doesn’t mean it won’t be windy. On the contrary, it will! But the wind will be unlikely to conform to neat-and-tidy forecasts due to the influence of various weather systems.

For Thursday, the Gorge will be impacted by high clouds from a far-offshore front. Marine clouds in the west and sunshine in the east will build the gradient as the day goes on. For the morning, we’ll have 11-15 everywhere, bumping up to 15-19 east of the low clouds late morning. By early afternoon, the clouds should burn back to west of Hood River. The wind will climb to gusty 23-28 from Viento to Rufus with the strong wind between Lyle and Rufus. The Roosevelt area will have 18-22 today, and Stevenson really depends on what happens with the clouds…

A cold front approaches Friday morning and moves inland in the afternoon, bringing rain to the entire Gorge. The day starts with clouds and light (less than 10) westerlies in the west and 10-13 east of Mosier. As the front approaches early afternoon, we’ll see the wind quickly jump to very gusty 25-29 (with big gusts) first in the west, and then moving quickly to the east and dying in the west as the rain hits. Position yourself somewhere ready to go – chasing this short-lived burst to the east will probably leave you disappointed.

Saturday looks showery and unstable in the western Gorge, meaning you’ll need to move yourself eastward to find wind. The day starts with light wind in the west and 10-13 east of Mosier. Westerlies build to 24-28 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon. As of right now, it looks like an approaching upper level low will knock the wind down to 15-18 on Sunday. That’s the GFS. The Euro thinks that forecast is ridiculous, and calls for 24-29. So, I guess we’ll wait and see how things shake out!

BONUS: No need for a bonus today, because there’s really nothing much happening at these locations for the next few days.
