Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather keeps the wind on its toes for the next several days; we’ll have short-lived periods of easterlies, westerlies, and some periods of calm wind. Models do have hints of a more consistent round of westerlies either Monday or Tuesday in a continued active pattern, but there are no guarantees yet.

Thursday starts with pressures of 29.86/29.98/30.01 for east gradients of 0.12/0.03. Easterlies will be 15-20mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento for a couple hours. A front swings through and turns the wind around. You’ll find W 20ish from Iwash to Viento, light wind (less than 10mph) from Swell to Doug’s, and gusty, very gusty 14-17 from The Dalles to Arlington after noon. River flow yesterday was 89-136kcfs, river temp is 58F, and high temp forecast is 59F.

Friday starts calm. The wind picks up to E 15 at Iwash and Stevenson after 2pm and rises to 30mph overnight. High temp: 60F. Saturday will have pre-dawn easterlies at 30mph. Those quickly drop to 15mph from Iwash to Viento. Even that doesn’t last. Expect calm wind midday with light westerlies (less than 10mph) in the late afternoon. Sunday does an E-W switch again with nothing worth noting. Some models have some westerlies on Monday, and more have some westerlies on Tuesday, but the signal isn’t really strong enough to make plans yet. Have a great day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Thanks to the atmospheric river, Timberline picked up 1.68” rain in the last 24 hours. Another round of moderate to heavy rain arrives Friday night into Saturday. That’s followed by cooler temps and the possibility of snow accumulation above 6000′ from Sunday night into Wednesday. After that, model spread on 850mb temp (5000′) is too big to make reliable predictions. Broad-brushing things: generally speaking, temps remain too warm for snow accumulation at 5000′ or below. Sorry, Skibowl and Teacup.

Thursday opens with moderate rain and finishes with light rain. The sky clears overnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ during the day and 6500′ overnight. Wind: W 50 early, W 35 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. Clear sky Friday gives way to moderate rain (0.7” or so) overnight. Snow level: 6500′ in the morning and 11-12,000′ with the rain. Wind: W 10 in the morning, S 30 in the afternoon, and SW 45-50 after midnight. Moderate rain continues on Saturday. By Sunday morning, the snow level will be down around 5500-6000′. The next round of precip arrives late Sunday. That should come in as snow above 5500-6000′. Ditto, intermittently, through Wednesday. After that? Too much uncertainty!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Calm wind becomes light easterly. No rainbows. Saturday will be showery all day. The sky will be cloudy then partly cloudy. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise to the upper 50’s. Light easterlies in the morning turn calm and then turn light westerly. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: temps dropped into the upper 20’s or less on Saturday morning. Trails that are exposed to open air (not under a tree canopy) are likely to experience freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride on thawed trails, you will do significant and permanent damage. DON’T. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
