Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Ready yourself. A four day windy stretch is on tap. It starts hot and windy in the Corridor and ends mild and windy in the desert. Thursday starts out with gradients of 0.13 and 0.05 with the NE Pacific High clocking in at 1022mb. Westerlies were in the 20-25 range from Viento to the White Salmon River early in the morning. Those gradients indicate a widespread, strong westerly day. The wind quickly picks up to 26-29 between Viento and Moiser. Stevenson will join with 24-28 late morning. Afternoon wind picks up to 27-31 from Viento all the way to Arlington. High temp Hood River: 80F. Arlington: 91F. River flow: 236kcfs. River temp: 59F.

Looking at Friday, we see more of the same. For the best results, go early; a front approaching offshore in the afternoon will likely knock down the western Gorge wind and introduce some gustiness elsewhere. Dawn Patrol starts with 24-27 from Viento to Mosier. The wind builds to 25-29 from Mosier to Doug’s by mid morning. Afternoon wind drops to 18-22 from Stevenson to Bingen – finish up your downwinder before that happens! Launches between Mosier and Arlington transition to gusty 25-29 in the afternoon. High temp Hood River: 78F.

A trough moves in to the western part of the region on Saturday. This sets up all-day clouds and sprinkles for the western Gorge. Don’t despair! The windy zone simply shifts eastward in response. Day breaks with 7-10 in the western Gorge and 13-16 between Mosier and Arlington. Give it a few hours. Desert heat and offshore high pressure of 1029mb will work the magic; westerlies pick up to 27-31 from Avery to Threemile. Sunday starts light and variable and cloudy and picks up to 24-28 east of The Dalles. High temps for the weekend will be 60-70F. Enjoy!
