Random Morning Thoughts

Happy New Year. No really. It’s Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and that means it’s time to reflect on the past year, let go of the past year, and move into the future. You can help yourself through that process by answering 10 questions during the Days of Awe. You can take a Tashlich hike today. Just wander along some flowing water, and then empty your pockets of crumbs into the stream, symbolizing letting go of last year’s “wrongs” or “sins” or regrets. Your choice of words. But letting go of those things allows us to move forward with a clean slate in the next year. You could even sit down with a friend and clear up a misunderstanding today. Happy New Year, everyone. May your next year be filled with blessings.

Use it here for free or make a donation and get on the mailing list for wind for the summer and Mt. Hood snow in the winter. It’s not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for 12 months. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my happy photo below. Don’t PayPal? You can send a check to Temira @ PO Box 841 in Hood River. Gorge Wind

Today’s wind will be light and variable early with W 8-12 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. Tomorrow starts light and variable with W 5-10 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. We’ll start off with light and variable wind on Saturday and see W 10-13 in the afternoon in the western Gorge. Sunday’s models aren’t much more optimistic.

At this point, the long-range models suggest offshore high pressure and inland westerlies for the first half of next week. I wouldn’t place money on that from this far out, but I’m keeping an eye on it. You should too.

Gorge Weather

As evidenced by the darkness outside my window this morning (not The Darkness, aka Brad U., but darkness, small “d”. If The Darkness was outside my window, I’d be a little creeped out.)… anyway, it’s dark and gloomy out there this morning, and that’s because it’s… yes… cloudy. We’ll see scattered showers with a few sunbreaks and a 17% chance of rainbows today with temps in the upper 50’s this morning and upper 60’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the low 50’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon. Saturday looks mostly sunny, with some low clouds early (maybe even some inversion gloom with the wet ground). Temps on Saturday will be in the low 50’s early and mid 70’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

I took a quick lap in Post Canyon yesterday (where I saw Lars, Cassie, Marge, Eric, Deb and Michelle). The dirt was nothing short of perfect. I wish I could ride today. Oh do I wish that. But you will have to ride for me. I heard that Dog River was getting there (to perfection) but wasn’t quite there yet. So. Post. Syncline. Maybe some of the upper 44 Road stuff? But remember, Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, and motorized access are still no-go as of 7am today.

River Levels / Fish Counts/Cheezburger Update

The John Day Dam is reading 68-73kcfs. The Dalles Dam is putting out 78kcfs. There are two river-wide logs on the White Salmon: 1 just below Cave Rapid on the Middle and one below Cave Wave on the Lower. I didn’t talk to Cheezburger yesterday. There were 12,486 Chinook, 3720 Coho, and 2444 Steelhead over Bonneville Dam yesterday. I forgot to get fish yesterday, so I’m going to try and go today, especially since my friends Mark and Marti have an extra smoker they are going to give me.

Volunteer for Hops Fest

Want to volunteer for Hops Fest? sign up here to pour beer. Want to do other volunteer stuff? sign up here to do stuff. All volunteers get a commemorative mug and 6 tokens. For beer. Ugh. I really do not like beer! But you do. So volunteer!

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

In events tonight, you can head to Dirty Fingers for the last Post n’ Pint bike ride of the season, trail conditions permitting. Post Canyon was just about as good as it gets yesterday, so barring too much rain today, it should be great! Also this evening, you can do yoga, free or by donation, at Yoga Samadhi’s community yoga class in White Salmon.

And then coming up this weekend, the last weekend of this report for the year, it’s hops fest in Hood River on Saturday, the Wasco Salmon and Steelhead fishing contest at the Deschutes on Saturday, and the Oregon Enduro series mountain bike race at Sandy Ridge and Skibowl on Saturday and Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
