Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! With the exception of Friday, the Gorge looks windy pretty much all the way through next weekend. There are short periods in there where the heat low may shift to the west and decrease or shut the wind down, but most days should be windy. And no, I normally don’t make extended predictions like this, but the ensembles and the clusters are pretty clear about the overall weather pattern: it’s a good one! For Thursday, we start with pressures of 30.09/30.05/30.07 for gradients of 0.04 and E 0.02. There’s so little wind out there that you could easily do a burn pile (with a permit, of course) or spray stuff on your giant pumpkin plant. As the desert heats up today, so does the wind. We’ll see a slow build to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River by early afternoon. Thanks to desert heating and a slight increase in offshore high pressure, the wind keeps climbing. Expect 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus for the executive session with 18-21 at Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 197-302kcfs (220-294kcfs at Rufus), river temp is 59.36F, and high temp forecast is 85F.

Peak heat on Friday equalizes temps across the Cascades and gives you a rest day. Late in the day, westerlies pick up to 10ish from Stevenson to Swell. High temp: 91F. Desperate for wind? The south coast and Jones Beach have got your back. Maybe Sauvie Island too.

Ridging shifts east of the Cascades on Saturday as a weak weather system swings through. Models have been up and down for the last few days on the strength of the wind, and ensembles continue to offer up a wide range of solutions. Given the dynamic nature of the setup, the wind will be up-and-down, at least for the first half of the day until things stabilize some. For now, let’s call it 18-21 from Stevenson to Swell in the morning and 25-28 from Stevenson to Arlington in the afternoon. That’s likely to change some. High temp: 86F under partly high overcast sky.

Ensemble forecasts cluster around “big day” for Sunday. Dawn Patrol should be 27-31 from Viento to Mosier or perhaps Doug’s. The wind climbs to 30-35 and fills in from Stevenson to Threemile in the afternoon. Boardman joins in the evening. High temp: 82F for Hood River. 85F for Arlington.

Extended: the wind for the next week depends on the exact placement of ridging, aka, the heat low. There’s some indication it could shift west of us, resulting in lesser wind, Monday and Tuesday, but many ensemble members keep us windy. For the latter half of next week, ensembles are all in on the standard-issue “Classic Gorge Setup of cool air to the west and hot air to the east. If nothing changes between now and then, we’re in for a long stretch of westerlies. Have fun out there!

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
