Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! That was a big day yesterday. Next chance for something similar is Saturday, and potentially next Tuesday, but Tuesday’s way too far out to be placing bets. In between now and then, we’ll have several days of more moderate westerlies for those of you inclined to gentler conditions, or for those of you seeking a rest day.

Thursday opens up with pressures of 30.18/30.09/30.04 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.05. Westerlies were generally in the 19-21 range with Arlington and Stevenson at 13-16. A brief ridge of high pressure builds inland today and knocks down the gradients. That said, the sounding model keeps the metro area cloudy until mid-morning and partly cloudy until early afternoon. That’ll give the desert a little jump on the heating. Models suggest the wind east of The Dalles will fade to 10-14 after noon. They suggest areas to the west will drop to 14-17. I suspect, given the setup, that we’ll have 20-23 for a couple hours from Viento to Rufus before the wind drops out east. In the west, from Stevenson to Mosier, the wind holds at 17-20 and beats the models by a few mph. Near Rowena: probably 14-17 this afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 170-264kcfs (it looked choppy at The Wall and Rufus yesterday, btw, and Arlington was excellent), river temp is 57.92F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 68F.

Friday sees a cool trough move inland in the afternoon. Cool air gets reinforced on the west side, and the desert heats up. As the weather system moves inland, the pressure drops in the desert. We like that! The day starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Swell with calm-to-10mph wind to the east. By late morning, we’ll have 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20 from Lyle to Doug’s. The incoming system ramps things up in the afternoon: westerlies pick up to gusty 26-29 from Stevenson to Rufus and then fill in at Arlington late. We’ll probably see the Swell area drop into the low 20’s mid to late afternoon. Depending on the extend of cloud incursion, the Rowena stretch has a good chance of dropping early evening. Head east of The Dalles for gusty 28-31 (probably the “wrong” direction at Rufus/The Wall) for the Executive Session after 5pm. High temp: 66F for Hood River and 71F for Arlington.

Low pressure in the desert combines with moderately strong offshore high pressure on Saturday for another windy day. A lackluster, cloudy (drizzly-in-Stevenson) start in the west (somewhere between “light” and low teens) combines with low 20’s out east. Afternoon wind rises to 19-22ish west of Lyle and 30-33 from Lyle to Boardman. The wind should last all the way into the evening.

Extended (when things get fuzzy): Models currently have warmer weather and 14-17ish focused from Stevenson to Mosier for Sunday and Monday. Sunday is the first CGW2 swap of the season – it’s at Lot 1 in Hood River. Models have potential for a bigger day on Tuesday as cooler air returns. I’ll get out a forecast on Friday morning before I leave on retreat. I’ll be back with the forecast next Thursday and around all summer until my next retreat over the Labor Day week. Have a great day on the water!
