Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and Mt. Hood starts out powdery today. There will be plenty of sunshine as well. Friday brings in clear sky followed by a trace of overnight precip. Saturday starts out dry and then turns super windy with heavy precip. By Sunday afternoon, we’re into a four or five day dry stretch.

Details for Thursday: partly cloudy sky early quickly turns clear and then stays that way for a sunny day on the hill. Free air freezing level: 1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and near 0′ overnight. No accumulation of snow. Wind: NNW 25 early, N 15 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight.

Friday looks partly cloudy early, snowy in the afternoon, and mixed-precipy overnight. The snow level will be near the surface early, at 1000′ in the afternoon, 4000′ around midnight, and 8000′ after midnight. Models suggest a trace to 0.2” water value (WV) of precip overnight, most likely starting as snow and then switching to freezing rain or mixed precip. Let’s call it 1/2” to 1” of snow before the switch. Wind will be NW 25 early, WNW 15 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Saturday morning looks mostly cloudy and friendly on the mountain, but Saturday night looks like a wicked storm. Snow level 8000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. It’s worth noting that the models do disagree on the 5000′ temps, meaning that the snow forecast is tricky. Precip totals from 4pm Saturday to 4am Sunday look like 1.0” WV to 1.4” WV. Given the model disagreement, this is just a guess, but let’s call it 6-10” of snow with a definite period of rain or mixed precip. Wind will be W 20 early, W 50 in the afternoon (which will shut down many lifts) and NW 30 after midnight. The rise in the snow level will likely result in significant icing on lifts overnight, leading to a giant mess on Sunday morning.

Sunday looks partly cloudy with a few snow flurries. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Precip: 0.1” WV during the day, for up to 1” of new snow. Wind: NW 20 early, NW 25 in the afternoon, and N 20 overnight. The weather then looks to stay dry through Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay off the trails – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate dirt and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Syncline is freeze-thaw, and therefore extremely delicate, above the fence. Please don’t ride it or you’ll do major trail damage. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
