Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and a heat low over the Willy Valley continues to contribute to east wind through the Gorge today. An upper low approaches from the south on Friday, setting up off the coast for several days. That’ll result in offshore wind and cloudy and/or showery weather.

For Thursday, easterlies will pick up to 15-20 mid-morning between Rooster Rock and Viento. Models suggest they will hold through the day, but it’s always good to get east wind earlier rather than later. River flow is 81,800cfs and temp is 64 degrees.

Friday sees that low move right off the coast, resulting in increased offshore flow in the morning. The day starts with east wind at 25-30 from Rooster to Stevenson with 15-20 near Viento. The wind will back off to 15-20 mid-afternoon and also pick up to E 5-10 east of Viento, all the way to Arlington.

Saturday’s models currently look a bit confusing. It appears we’ll see light westerlies in the western half of the Gorge, perhaps 10-13, with easterlies east of Mosier, perhaps 12-15. With the high-res model not yet refreshed this morning, it’s a bit tricky telling the details. Hopefully they’ll become more clear in a couple hours. Sunday’s forecast looks like E 10-15 with sprinkles.

BONUS: Jones Thursday-Saturday: no. Sauvie’s Thursday: 13-16. Friday-Saturday: no. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: 15-20/15-20/no, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Friday: SW5/S10/S20, NW 4′ @ 8. Saturday: S10-15 everywhere, NW 3′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

One theory of mind suggests that there is no central governor; rather, various parts of the mind attempt to compete for dominance. Much like a squeaky wheel, the loudest gets the most attention. Allowing this process to happen automatically reinforces whatever patterns have been hard-wired into the mind.

Take a moment to notice what’s competing for attention right now… (I’ve got these: planning for adventures later this week, the cup of coffee next to me, blueberry pies, connecting with my friend Joaquin later today, the fact that I feel relaxed right now, sleepiness, my hurting knee, and the beautiful view in front of me.) My mind really wants to focus on something worrisome, but I’m actively working to override that tendency.

You can change the mind’s automatic attention patterns by starting to focus on things that you deem worthy of attention. For example, we often focus on painful or worrisome things rather than pleasantries. In my case, I could choose to fully experience contentment or the alpenglow on Adams while all those other things murmur in the background.

You too can do this. Focusing attention requires present-moment awareness, which is a skill that requires practice. But if you do this often, your awareness and presence will become more constant, and your mind will learn to be louder about more enjoyable things. May you be content. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt has become slightly less wet than brown pow, but it’s still excellent, especially if you go up in elevation in Post. Whoopdee and Hospital Hill and Underwood have reopened. Post Canyon motorized use has also reopened. I’m guessing the 44 Road trails are also experiencing brown pow. Trails on the Washington side will also be in epic shape – they got even more rain!
