Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Thursday, everyone! I hope all of you were out on the river shredding it up yesterday while I was working away at Goldendale Jail and Skyline Hospital. Looked like an awesome one out there! That’s it for westerlies for a while – high pressure brings east wind for a few days, and then storm systems impact the Northwest to start next week. Before I dive in… it’s been a rough week for a lot of people here in the Gorge. Three of our pals, Darren Rogers, Patrick Quigley, and Felix Louis N’Jai, died this week. I’m going to leave it to their close friends to share the light and the memories of these guys. Just stay ready to offer up hugs and kind words to the many folks with hurting hearts. This is really one of those weeks where there aren’t enough words to hold the loss. The windsports community is a tight-knit and beautiful one, and the hard part of that is we all feel the pain when death comes.

I wish I could offer up big westerlies to soothe some of the pain and aid in the celebrations of life, but all I have (or rather, all that Mother Nature has) is easterlies. Expect 25mph or so today from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson with 15-20 near Viento. The wind holds until early afternoon and drops to 15mph from Iwash to Stevenson and 10mph near Viento. River flow yesterday was 73-101kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Friday brings easterlies that last a little later in the day. Eventually they fade, but hopefully not before you are tired. The day opens with 30-35 at Iwash Rock, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 20ish at Viento. After 2pm or so, the wind fades: 15-20 at Iwash, 15 at Stevenson, and 10-15 at Viento. High temp: 78F.

Saturday’s easterlies die off a little earlier, so you’ll need to move quicker. Iwash: 25mph. Stevenson: 25mph. Viento: 15-20mph. Get on it! By the afternoon, the wind will be down to 10mph at all locations. High temp: 79F. Enjoy the warmth and sunshine and wind!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
