Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a beautiful, sunny Thanksgiving morning on Mt. Hood, and it’s a great time to give thanks for all the opportunities to play in the snow here in the Northwest. We don’t have ski season yet, but we do have strong hints of colder, snowy weather starting late Saturday and continuing into the extended forecast. In the meantime… even Teacup had to give up on grooming due to rain-saturated snow. Also, apologies for the lack of a forecast yesterday – I got called on a crisis before 7am and didn’t have time. And… if you’re on the email list, apologies for the issues with delivery right now – that is a problem at my server, and they are working on troubleshooting and fixing. In the meantime, the forecast is available on my website, and TATAS is available on Facebook.

OK. The forecast. Today (Thursday) on Mt. Hood, it’ll be sunny and relatively warm all day. It’ll quite possibly be warmer than at your house! The free air freezing level (FAF) hovers between 11,000′ and 12,000′ all day under sunny sky. Temps at 5000′ rise to 50F or so. Wind: SW 15-25 all day and all night.

Friday starts out clear, quickly turns cloudy, and adds some mixed precip early afternoon. That switches to snow in the evening. The snow level will be 11,000′ in the morning, 5500′ when the precip hits, 2500′ in the evening, and down to 1500′ overnight. About 0.3” to 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast. At best, we’ll get an inch or two of accumulating snow at 5000′. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning builds to WSW 25-35 in the afternoon and NW 25-35 in the evening and overnight.

Saturday starts with clear sky or perhaps a few orographic flurries. The sky turns partly cloudy during the day, and light snowfall arrives in the evening. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the evening, and 3000′ overnight. Just an inch of new snow is forecast from 0.1” WE. Wind: NW 30-35 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 50 overnight.

Take that wind, add in some precip, and knock the snow level down to 1000-2500′ (models disagree), and you have your Sunday forecast. Up to a foot of new snow is in the cards. Models then disagree on how low the snow level falls and how much precip comes in over the next week. Whatever precip does arrive in the first week of December (when, naturally, I’ll be on retreat) will fall as snow in the mountains and could potentially fall as snow at your house. But you’ll have to read TATAS for that information! Happy Thanksgiving!

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re bold and warm-blooded, you can start your Thanksgiving with a session on the river. The wind will be in the 40-45 range at Rooster. 30-35 range at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. That wind should hold all day. River flow readings are 82-142kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 47F. Friday starts with easterlies at 20-25 (Stevenson) and 15-20 (Rooster) and 10-15 (Viento). The wind turns calm by 10am and then shifts westerly. You’ll find 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier early to mid afternoon followed by gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles late afternoon on. Rufus should build to 20-23 just before sunset. You’ll also be dealing with rain to Rowena from early afternoon on, so your best bet may be Avery to Rufus. High temp: 49F. Saturday starts with 11-14mph westerlies all through the Gorge. Afternoon: light west of The Dalles and 11-14 east of The Dalles. High temp: 46F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Out on the trails, we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
