Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

High overcast sky gives way to sunshine on Thursday afternoon. We’ll then have mostly clear sky for most of the next couple of days before a 2/3 chance at a little bit of snow on Saturday night into Sunday daytime.

Details for Thursday: the mountain starts high overcast and turns sunny mid or late morning. The free air freezing level will be 9000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 6000′ overnight. NO precip. Wind: SW 10-20 early, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 10-25 overnight.

Friday looks sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ in the morning and will slowly rise to 7000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Saturday starts out clear, turns high overcast in the afternoon, and sees snowfall after midnight, perhaps. The freezing level will be 7000′ most of the day and will fall to around 2500-3000′ when the precip arrives. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

About 2/3 of the ensemble members predict snow on Sunday, and the totals range from about 1-5”. The predicted snow level is 3000′ in the morning and 2000′ in the afternoon with the freezing level dropping to 1000′ or less under clear sky overnight. Wind will be moderate, 20mph out of the west or so. After that, models hint at the next round of moisture late next week. Have a great time on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable wind for most of the Gorge Thursday morning (exception: 15ish at Rooster) switches to westerlies and stays that way for a few more days. Details on Thursday include gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s by noon with gusty 21-24 from Viento to Arlington (13-16 Stevenson) mid-afternoon on. River flow is 139ckfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is a spectacular 68F.

Friday starts with light westerlies at 5mph or so in the western Gorge with light and variable wind east of Mosier. This not-much wind holds though early afternoon when westerlies pick up to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp: 63F. That teen-strength wind fills to Biggs mid afternoon. Saturday starts calm and stays light through late morning or early afternoon. Later on, the wind picks up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe to Mosier too. High temp: 67F.

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is still CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail in the next couple of weeks, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. Other news: Mountain View Cycles women’s ride starts up this Thursday. Bottom of Post at 5:30pm. Dirty Fingers has Sunday gravel rides.
