Thursday. Sun – get it while you can.

It’s starting to feel a lot like fall, but that isn’t stopping the Gorge westerlies. Today started off with a promising gradient of .08 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc). That gradient doesn’t have much support from offshore high pressure; on the contrary, low pressure is headed this way. Southerly flow associated with the low pressure also…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

That said, we’ll start off with 5-10 while the desert takes a few hours to warm up. By noon, we should have 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon wind will rise to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. The strongest wind today will likely be between Swell and Doug’s, with Doug’s the probably go-to spot.

Friday sees a low pressure system take up residence off the coast. That will limit the gradients, both on a local scale and on a synoptic scale. As a weather system draws closer in the afternoon, the wind speed will pick up. Expect 10-13 from Viento to Arlington to start the day. In the afternoon, we’ll have 15-18 from Steven’s Locks to Hood River with 21-24 from Mosier to Arlington.

Saturday looks like a sprinkly one in the western Gorge as an offshore low sends drizzle our way. Expect light and variable wind in the morning. As the rainfall rate picks up in the afternoon, so will the wind… just a bit. We’ll have 12-15 east of The Dalles with 5-10 near Hood River. Sunday currently looks like light east wind in the morning with westerlies at 20-23 in the far east Gorge in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Looks like I’ve hit up against a time wall this morning. No thoughts. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there this morning, but we’ll probably see increasing thin high clouds today as an offshore low lets you know it’s around. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. No rainbows. Friday sees more high clouds than today. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. No rainbows. Saturday looks mostly cloudy with a chance of sprinkles in the morning and periods of drizzle in the afternoon. Light wind. 34% chance of rainbows. The snow level on Saturday will be 5500′.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have nothing new to report today. Oh, wait. Yes I do. Apparently SDS decided not to do logging on the Whoopdee this year, so the Whoopdee is open and not destroyed. Hospital Hill is still closed. Trails in the Gifford Pinchot are likely to be tacky, and trails in the Mt. Hood National Forest are likely to be dry. In road biking news, you’ll want to get out in the morning today and tomorrow because the afternoon looks windy.

Upcoming Events

Today is Thursday, and it’s a Thursday in early fall. That makes this the last Post n’ Pint ride of the season. Be at Dirty Fingers at 5pm with your bike lights. There’s community yoga at Samadhi tonight at 6, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30 and mountain bike movies at Stoked Roasters at 7:30 ($3). Tomorrow morning at 7am, be at Kickstand Coffee for the donut run – jog 4 miles and get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Earn more calories than you burn!

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
