Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We have have one last day of sunny weather for the mountain before we move into a pattern of light afternoon snow flurries for a few days. The best chance for significant snowfall will be on Friday, when a area of steady precipitation may or may not set up over Mt. Hood. Looking long-range, the beginning of next week includes a return to sunshine for the mountain.

For Thursday, the day will start off clear. Clouds move in during the afternoon, and a few snowflakes fall overnight. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning and 4500′ in the afternoon. The snow level overnight will be around 4500′ in the evening and 2000′ after midnight. Wind will be S 10 in the morning, SE 15 in the afternoon, and E 15 after midnight.

Friday may or may not see steady snowfall. Models predict a narrow band of steady precipitation will set up somewhere around the Columbia, but the exact location will determine the outcome of Friday. For now, let’s say that the snow level will be 2000′ early and 3500′ in the afternoon and evening. Up to .5” water value (WV) falls during the day, for up to 5” of new snow. A trace of additional snowfall happens overnight. Wind Friday will be E 15 early, light and variable in the afternoon, and NW 15 overnight.

Saturday looks partly cloudy early and cloudy in the afternoon with intermittent snow showers. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Up to 1” of snow will fall in the afternoon and evening. Wind will be NW 15 early, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 10 after midnight. Sunday looks similar: partly to mostly cloudy early with afternoon snow flurries and light wind. Monday and Tuesday currently look sunny.

Random Morning Thoughts

Sometimes when people get stressed or depressed, they stop doing the things that normally bring them pleasure. This can be due to simple lack of time, but it can also be due to the fact that those things no longer bring pleasure. This is actually a pretty common phenomenon.

I believe that the mind still takes pleasure in these things on some level. And I have no doubt at all that the capacity to enjoy the things we love still lives on, even when we can’t feel that sense of enjoyment. In other words, the things we love remain healing, even when we can’t feel the healing happen.

This means it’s important to find other reasons than “this feels good” to participate in the things that bring us joy. Perhaps the reason is companionship. Or relaxation. Or an easing of spiritual burdens. Or simply a change of scenery. I can’t tell you what it is for you, but I can suggest that you find other reasons to “keep dong stuff” than “pleasure”. May your life be multifaceted and interesting. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Thursday, we’ll have east wind at 10-15 all morning near Rooster and Stevenson and east wind at 5-10 through the entire Gorge in the afternoon. Friday looks like light west wind all day. Saturday starts with W 12-15 in the eastern Gorge and 5-10 in the west. In the afternoon, a low pressure system moves into the desert and kicks the wind up to gusty 25-29 from The Dalles to Boardman. Expect less wind in the western Gorge, perhaps 10-13. Sunday looks light and variable.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Thursday is starting off clear. High clouds will move in during the afternoon and evening. It’s possible a couple raindrops (or even several) may fall overnight. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light east wind. No rainbows. We probably won’t see frost Friday morning due to overnight clouds. Depending on how things set up, we could see steady light rain Friday. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 81% chance of rainbows. Saturday starts off partly cloudy and turns sprinkly in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 74% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks cloudy and sprinkly with light wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

I do believe the dirt is good, and I do believe you should get as much of it or perfect pavement as you can today. It’s going to rain, perhaps, tomorrow. Do be aware that sub-freezing temperatures last night will impact trails exposed to open air. It would be best if you could wait until late afternoon to ride dirt. Come to think of it, pavement and gravel might be a better bet today. Scratch what I said earlier. Moving on, the HRATS have a work party meeting at Family Man at 9:30am on Saturday. The movie Ciclovida plays on Friday night at Rockford Grange. There’s another HRATS work party on the 24th.

Upcoming Events

Opportunities to give back: Doug’s Beach work party at 9am on 3/17. Post Canyon work party at 9:30am (meet at Family Man) on 3/17. Hatchery work party at 9am on 3/24. Mitchell Ridge work party at 9:30am on 3/24 (meet at the bottom of Mitchell Ridge – please carpool).

There’s free meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6:15am. There’s free yoga at 8am at Flow. That’s followed by $5Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, community yoga at 6pm at Samadhi in White Salmon, and free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. On Friday evening, the movie Ciclovida plays at the Rockford Grange. This one will delight gardener-cyclists: Brazilian farmers riding bikes around the country looking for seeds.
