Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Stormy weather continues this morning on Mt. Hood, messing with the Nordic skiers but pleasing folks headed to the Alpine side or BC. 8” new in the last 24 hours is a good start to your Thursday! Snow continues today and then stops for Three days before returning late Sunday.

Looking more closely at Thursday, we have limited visibility due to wind and snow. That’ll change later. By afternoon, orographic snowfall mixes with sunbreaks. The sky clears overnight. Snow level: 2500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.1-0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast before the snow stops. That’s 1-2” fluffy new snow. Wind: NW 30-40 early fading to NW 20-25 this afternoon and holding overnight.

Friday looks clear and sunny. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning and 8000′ from mid-afternoon on. Wind: NW 20-25 all day fading to NW 15-20 overnight. Saturday also looks sunny. The FAF will be 8000′ in the morning and 10,000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Sunday starts clear and warm and turns cloudy and snowy and stormy overnight. The freezing/snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and will crash to 1000′ after midnight. Snow starts up around 8pm according to the latest forecast. About 0.7-0.8” WE is predicted, for 7-8” of increasingly dry snow. Wind: WSW 10-20 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, SW 30-50 in the evening, and W 40 overnight. Monday looks stormy and snowy with at least half a foot of new snow and WNW wind at 40-45. Looks fun. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies of some form will stick around for the next four days. For those of you who like your small gear, the strongest wind days will be Friday and Monday. Thursday starts with gradients of .10 and .09 with westerlies at 17-23 most places. Looks like the wind will dip to 14-17 for the morning and then pick up to 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington with 13-16 west of there. River flow is 140kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 53F.

Friday starts with 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-11 east of there. Thanks to offshore high pressure and what may be lee-side troughing, afternoon westerlies pick up to 26-30+ from Viento to Threemile with 16-20+ in Stevenson. High temp: 56F in Hood River, 61F in Arlington. Saturday starts with 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. High pressure picks up a positive tilt and pushes inland for afternoon westerlies at gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 63F. We’d originally pegged Sunday as the nuker day, but the timing has change. It’ll now be pre-frontal with gusty, unreliable westerlies that pick up in the afternoon. Monday: 30-40 but chilly.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy sky this morning turns partly cloudy this afternoon. Sprinkles are possible. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 19% chance of rainbows. Friday looks mostly cloudy to start and partly cloudy or sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies in the morning. Strong westerlies later. No rainbows. Saturday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

Cows begin arriving on Hospital Hill on Thursday, 3/25. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer.
