Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Thursday is starting out partly cloudy on the mountain. We’ll see some rain and then some snow. The rest of the forecast looks colder and snowier, generally speaking.

For Thursday, expect partly cloudy conditions early. Rain moves in by 8am or so and switches to snow mid-afternoon. Snow level 8000′ early and 1000′ after midnight. Precip: 0.7” water value (WV) before 4pm. Let’s call that 0.3” to 0.4” rain and 2-3” of snow. An additional 0.4” WV falls overnight in cooler temps for 4-5” of powder. Wind will be SW 30 early, SW 40 in the afternoon, WSW 40 in the evening and WNW 30 after midnight.

Friday starts off clear, develops some mid-level clouds and flurries midday, and stays that way overnight. Snow level 1000′ for the 24 hour period. Precip: 0.1” WV during the day, for up to 1” of new snow. Just a few flurries overnight. Wind: WNW 30 early, W 15 in the afternoon, W 20 after midnight.

A stronger system moves in Saturday night for significant snowfall. Snow level 0′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. The day looks dry until 4pm or so, at which point 0.8” WV arrives. With the cooler temps, we should see 8-9” of new, high-quality snow with significant wind-loading on leeward slopes. Wind will be W 20 early, SW 25 during the day, and W 40 overnight.

Timing and temp differences exist on the Sunday weather system. For now, let’s just say it looks snowy during the day with the potential for mixed precip overnight. With that forecast, Sunday is looking like a powder day on Mt. Hood.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A frontal system swings through on Thursday and is followed by building high pressure offshore. That means westerlies. The day starts with E 15-20 or so. By 10am, the wind goes calm. Between 1pm and 4pm, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 24-28 pretty much everywhere with a period of gusty 28-32 possible east of The Dalles. Note the timing: the wind will start late in the day. You’ll probably have to drive preemptively to get it. River flow is 123kcfs and temp is 45 degrees. Watch for debris in the water after all that rain the past few days. Friday’s wind starts with W 12-15 everywhere. The wind will fade during the day and turn easterly after sunset. Saturday starts with E 15-20, builds to E 30-35, and backs off to E 15-20 in the afternoon.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay out of Post, off Whoopdee, and off Hospital Hill – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Try the face of Syncline for best results. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
