Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It is snowing and stormy on Mt. Hood this morning, and the snowfall will continue into Friday. The picture becomes trickier after midday Friday as models disagree on the snow level. Not only do the models disagree; there’s between-product differences on the GFS that result in a snow level of 4000′ with the sounding models and 6000′ on the 850mb temp model. All those words mean is that the weather is going to be difficult to pin down the next few days.

For Thursday, you can expect a snowy day. The snow level will be 2000′ or so all day long. About .4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 4-5” of snow. Another .4” falls tonight, for another 4-5” of fresh powder. Wind will be W 35 all day and WSW 30-35 after midnight.

Friday currently looks snowy during the day and a touch warmer with mixed precip possible overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ during the day, 4000′ in the afternoon, and possibly 5500′ overnight. Model disagreement, meh. About .6” WV falls during the day, for about 6” of new snow. A trace or up to .1” WV falls overnight as either wet snow or mixed precip. No accumulation. Wind will be WSW 35 all day.

Saturday brings another round of model disagreement, especially in the afternoon. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, as high as 6000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. About .1” WV falls during the day, giving us up to an inch of new snow. .1-.2” WV falls overnight, likely as mixed precip or wet snow. Up to 1” accumulation. Wind will be WSW 35 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and S 10-15 overnight.

Sunday’s snow level is unclear too. Most likely it will hover around 5500′. That works out to wet snow or mixed precip, with the latter more likely due to the storm track. About .4” WV falls during the day. No accumulation SE/S/SW wind at 15ish all day. Monday looks colder with several inches of new snow.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the really wonderful things about being a therapist is that it forces me to be open to all sorts of new experiences. My job is to understand my clients as deeply as possible and to, essentially, walk in their shoes. Without going into details and risking a break in confidentiality, I will say that this encourages me to try new things that are completely outside of my experience.

In my life outside my office, my experience can be limited by the fact that certain behaviors or activities are “not my thing”. By immersing myself in the perspective of others, the “not my thing” becomes interesting, exciting, worth trying.

Try it for yourself something. The next time you find yourself saying, “That’s not my thing,” see if you can really enter into the perspective of the person who likes that thing. See if you can understand what’s there worth exploring. Give that thing a shot, and see what happens for you. If nothing else, you might shake up your world just a little bit and create space for new experiences. May you be curious and open. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of weather systems over the next few days will drive gusty west wind in the Gorge. For Thursday, the western Gorge will have gusty 12-19 all day. Locations east of The Dalles will see gusty 25-28 all day, and that stronger wind will probably backfill to Mosier, or at least Rowena, this afternoon. Friday looks rainy with light westerlies in the western Gorge. After 2pm, the wind will pick up to gusty 10-15 east of Mosier. Saturday starts off with light westerlies. A weak front offshore in the afternoon will drive gusty west wind at 10-13 or so from Viento east to Rufus.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s too wet to ride anywhere this morning without damaging the trails. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, and that means NO DOGS. Even your dog! The next chance for a decent day of road riding will be Friday east of Hood River and Saturday everywhere.
