Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and it’s a sunny, calm and somewhat smoky morning. We’ll see a slow and steady build in the wind today. Friday sees somewhat stronger westerlies as a frontal system approaches. The wind shifts to the east for the weekend as low clouds move into the western half of the state.

Thursday started off with perfect fishing weather: zero wind. We’ll see a build to W 14-18 midday from Stevenson to The Dalles. Late this afternoon, probably after 5pm, the wind will pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Avery with light westerlies farther east.

Friday sees a low pressure trough moving west towards BC, which may start to drag some marine air into the metro area late in the day. That might, or might not, give us a bump in the westerlies near Hood River mid-afternoon. The day starts with 13-16 from Viento to Mosier with 5-10 east and west of there. By midday, the westerlies build to 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. If everything works out just right, we’ll see a mid-afternoon or late afternoon burst of 24-28 from Viento to Hood River.

That trough continues its westward progression on Saturday. Low clouds fill the Willy Valley and western Gorge for much of the day. This shifts the wind east, giving us 5-10 in the west and 15-18 east of The Dalles to start the day. Afternoon westerlies remain relatively light in the west: 7-11 or so. Locations east of Mosier see 21-24. That said, our other friendly meteorological model likes the idea of 25-28 Saturday afternoon, and so do I. So, mid 20’s, at least. Sunday currently looks like 20-24ish.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 18-22. Friday: 21-24. Saturday: nope. Sauvie’s Thursday: 10-13. Friday: 7-10. Saturday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: X/X/5-10, NW swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Friday: X/X/5-10, W 2′ @ 8. Saturday: X/X/15-20, W 4′ @ 7.
