Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

It’s not just windy outside this morning; it’s windy inside my house too, as the wind blows in my north window and out my south window. Indoor wind is always a good sign for Dawn Patrol, and the on-river sensors agrees, with Swell, Maryhill and Arlington already reading in the mid 20’s. In case you were wondering, the 6am gradients were .14 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc) and .67 (eph-dls). There is one little monkey wrench in the picture today: a very weak weather disturbance is forecast to move through early the morning, and that may wreak havoc with the wind for a few hours.

That said, expect 23-27 from Swell to Mosier this morning with, apparently, mid-twenties at Maryhill and Arlington too. Other beaches were in the 15-18 range to start the day. By mid-morning, we should have 28-32 from Viento to Rufus, with Arlington joining the mix late afternoon. Stevenson will see 25-29 from late morning on. Periods of 30+ are likely today as well, most likely at the Rowena stretch of the river early to mid afternoon and at the Maryhill stretch of river during the same time period.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some mid-morning 30+ at Swell, but then again, I also wouldn’t be surprised to see that weak weather disturbance knock the wind down at Swell mid-morning. Moral of the story: get out now while it’s windy or go for the sure thing later on! One last word of caution: watch out for unicorns and rainbows on the river today!

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow sees a weak trough of low pressure cross BC in the morning, setting us up for another big day on the river. Expect 24-28 for Dawn Patrol, 28-32 for the morning session, and 26-30 in the afternoon. Although the entire Scenic Area will have strong wind in the morning, the wind will fade east of Rufus in the afternoon, leaving the Swell to Rufus stretch as the place to be later in the day.

Saturday looks like E 16-19. Sunday starts off with E 10-13 and switches to W 10-13 late.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/5-10/30-35, NW swell 8′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/10-15/30+, NW 7′ @ 9. Saturday: 20-25/20-25/Light, NW 5′ @ 8.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 14-17. Jones Saturday, light. Sauvie’s today, 9-12. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 7-10. Sauvie’s Saturday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts

WilKRainbow
I’m sitting here this morning spinning a black pen between my two hands while I contemplate what to write. Everything on my mind is deeply personal and mostly unresolved, which makes it terrible fodder for shared reflection.

Someone who doesn’t read my blog once suggested that me sharing my personal thoughts was a bit pathological. That inspired me to do a bit of reading on what makes for good vulnerable writing. It turns out (according to the exactly one “expert” I read), that speaking from a healed place of self-understanding is the key.

The implication of this is that we all have wisdom to share. If we’ve come to a healthy place of closure with a previous source of pain, we have a gift to give to others. I’m talking to you, yes you. You too have wisdom to share. I don’t know what your wisdom consists of, but you do. Take strength in what you’ve accomplished, take strength in what you’ve survived, and inspire others to do the same. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

In a nice twist this morning, the westerlies have blown the smoke far, far away from the western Gorge, leaving us with crystal-clear air and blue sky. Expect a sunny day with temps in the mid 60’s early and upper 70’s this afternoon. That’s a 15 degree drop from yesterday, yay! Nuking wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off mostly clear with clouds in the western Gorge. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks sunny and warmer with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s not much to say here other than that it’s going to be much cooler today. Much cooler, and much windier. And much less smoky. If those things appeal, go ride.

If you’re interested in bike touring, Oregon State Parks has a great event this weekend, Let’s go Bike Touring. They’ll teach you how to plan a tour, and they’ll give you some information about how bike touring impacts the planet and communities. You’ll need to provide your own lunch, but they’ll have some bikes available if you don’t have one. RSVP’s are required. Visit the link above for more information.
