Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Before we get into the forecast today, I’d like to take a little time for us to be with the friends and family of powder shredder Steve Leavitt of The Dalles, who has been missing at Meadows since Tuesday. We can only imagine what they’re going through right now… shock, grief, worry, anxiety, helplessness and perhaps some accompanying feelings of guilt or self-judgment or anger. While there’s not much we, the snowsports community, can do at this time, we can take a moment to empathize with Steve’s loved ones and appreciate our loved ones. The weather on Mt. Hood is equally gloomy today. It’s raining on Mt. Hood and will continue to rain. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 7500′ in the afternoon, 6500′ late, and 6000′ on Friday morning after the precipitation tapers off. We’ll see about 1” of rain by 4pm followed by another 1” of rain overnight. Wind today will be W 35 for mcuh fot he day, WSW 40 in the afternoon, and WSW 55 after midnight.
For Friday, the sounding models suggest a sunny day, but the precip model suggests some orographic warm snowfall and/or sprinkles. So, that makes this a best-guess forecast. The snow level will be 6000′ all day on Friday. We’ll see .1-.3” water value (WV) between 4am and 2pm, after which models agree on clear sky. That’s probably going to fall as wet snow, for 1” of new or so. Wind on Friday will be WSW 50 in the morning, slowly going to WNW 35 in the afternoon and SW 15-20 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Saturday looks clear to start, cloudy mid-morning, and either rainy or snowy in the afternoon and overnight. Once again, the snow level will be borderline for T-line and Meadows base elevation. The Euro is running a little warmer than the GFS, complicating the forecast. As of right now, it looks like the snow level will be 6500′ Saturday morning and 6000′ when the precipitation moves in, with the snow level at 5000′ after midnight, after all the precip has moved through. For now, let’s call it wet snow or a rain/snow mix at 5000′. We’ll see .5” WV between 1pm and 4pm, for either rain or an inch or two of wet snow. Then we’ll see another .8” WV overnight, for a few inches of wet snow with more up high. Wind on Saturday will be SW 15 in the morning, building to WSW 40 in the afternoon and W 30 after midnight. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead Saturday night!
Sunday currently looks dry with partly cloudy sky in the morning and clouds in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 5000′ in the morning and 9500′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind on Sunday will be W 30 for much of the day, backing off to WSW 25 in the afternoon and evening. Models disagree on Monday. Both say it will be too warm for snow, but they disagree on the intensity of the Monday night rain.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Light and variable wind all day long turns to E 5-10 tonight. Friday sees a strong weather system push across the region. That will give us strong west wind for most of the day for most of the Gorge. Models suggest the Hood River area won’t see the west wind, at least until the afternoon, so let’s go with this: W 23-26 all day from Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks. W 26-30+ from dawn through 3pm from The Dalles eastward to Threemile. W 13-16 in the morning from HR to Doug’s with W 22-25 in the afternoon. Saturday starts off with E 35-40 at Rooster (20-25 at Stevenson) and backs off to calm wind by 2pm, becoming light westerly after that.

It’s another grey and rainy morning in Hood River, so let’s talk about the Sunday when it’s supposed to be 55 degrees!!! Yay!!! Okay, back to today… Expect light rain and sprinkles through 1pm, followed by moderate and heavy rain through midnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday looks showery and sprinkly through 2pm with dry weather afternoon. Partly cloudy sky all day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Chance of black ice overnight if the sky clears. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks dry through midday with moderate to heavy rain in the western Gorge through 7pm, followed by light rain through Sunday morning. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. 4% chance of rainbows, but only in the afternoon.

Upcoming Events
There’s a community dance-exercise class at 11am at the White Salmon Grange. There’s community yoga tonight at 6pm at Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30. Coming up Friday morning, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run. A 4 mile jog at 7am gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Healthy. Very healthy.
