Thursday: plenty of wind for your windsporting pleasure. Chance of thunder too.

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Several days of westerlies are scheduled for your watersports pleasure. While the wind will be on the gusty side, it’ll also be on the stronger side of moderate for the next three days. As you can tell by the clouds on this Thursday morning, it’s not exactly an ideal setup for wind. That probably won’t stop it! Expect variable to 15mph for the start of the day. The wind then steadily builds to gusty 25-29 this afternoon from The Dalles to Arlington with 22-26 west of The Dalles. Steadiest wind will likely be east of The Dalles. However… there’s a chance of elevated thunderstorms out there. That wouldn’t necessarily stop the wind, but it might make it dangerous to be holding a pole or a kite. River flow is 286kcfs (fine for the Rufus stretch) and temp is 57 degrees.

Offshore high pressure combines with inland low pressure centered over southern Idaho on Friday afternoon for a strong and relatively steady westerly day. Expect 8-11 everywhere to start the day. It’ll be a quick build from there with the wind rising to 29-33 from Stevenson to Arlington with 33-36 possible from Rowena to Rufus.

An upper low moves towards the southern coast on Saturday. It appears that offshore high pressure will still exert enough influence to combine with Thursday’s far-inland low. That’ll keep the wind going. For now, our morning forecast is 10-13 int eh west and 20-23 in the east. That rises to gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles Saturday afternoon. Sunday currently looks to max out at 22-25 east of The Dalles.
