Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Today might not be quite the rest day you were looking for, but it’s almost certainly going to be a rest day from wind sports. That’s the first rest day in goodness knows how long! Make the most of it. Westerlies return on Friday and stick around at least through the weekend and probably longer.

Thursday starts with nearly-flat pressures: 29.98/29.98/30.00 for a light east gradient. Viento responded with E 14mph, but all other locations are less than 10mph. We’ll see a few hours of E 15ish this morning at Stevenson and Viento before the wind turns calm early afternoon. Heat in The Dalles outpaces heat in the metro area by about 5 degrees today, and this turns the wind westerly late afternoon. You’ll find W 10mph near Stevenson by 2pm or so. The wind slowly builds to 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell with 12-15 at Hood River. To the east: calm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 78-=163kcfs, river temp is 70.70F, and high temp forecast is 101F for Hood River.

Expect a warm, muggy, breezy start to the day on Friday. A weak offshore high knocks the temps down a little on the west side, but the east side remains blazing hot: 107F for Pasco. Tons of moisture will be present, and that means instability will be present to diminish wind quality. All that said… expect dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus and 10-13 at Stevenson and Arlington. This holds for a few hours. Things destabilize in the afternoon, and this knocks the wind down at Swell and nudges it upward from Lyle to Arlington. Expect afternoon wind at gusty 15-18 near Swell with 19-22 elsewhere between Stevenson and Mosier. From Lyle to Rufus, and perhaps Arlington too, you’ll find gusty 23-26. Remember that these numbers are for iWind sensor readings, and the sensors for The Wall and Arlington generally read about 5mph higher than the same wind at Swell. High temp: 93F for Hood River and 100F for Arlington.

Venmo

Saturday brings another round of moderately strong westerlies that are affected by instability. Things will be most stable in the morning, and you’ll want to stay west of Rufus – wind out in the desert is forecast to turn light by late morning. Dawn patrol is your friend. You’ll find 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 at Stevenson and areas between Lyle and Arlington. That lasts until 11am or so. Instability kicks in midday. The wind drops to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier and fills in at 15-18 from Lyle to Doug’s. To the east: light and variable. Barring surface-based thunderstorms, afternoon wind rises to gusty 20-23 from Mosier to Rufus with 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River and light/variable wind east of Rufus. High temp: 89 for Hod River.

Extended: Instability sticks around on Sunday for a similar forecast to Saturday. Ensembles hint at the potential for slightly stronger wind on Monday and a windier (but not nuking) day on Tuesday. Generally speaking, the extended ensembles hold on to moderate westerlies beyond Tuesday, but there’s quite a bit of range. Don’t plan around it yet. Stay cool today!
