Gorge Wind Forecast
Not much is happening on the river this morning other than the first day of steam rising from the water. It’s COLD out there to start your Thursday! The wind takes a break all day today and returns for the next few days. We still have a shot at our first big fall day on Sunday.
Thursday: light and variable all day. River flow is 52,200 cfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 66F. Friday starts light and variable. An offshore front creates enough dynamics for moderate afternoon westerlies. By midday, the wind rises to 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Hood River to The Dalles with 7-10 to the west and light/variable wind out east. High temp forecast is 63F.
Saturday sees a brief inland high pressure get dislodged by an approaching cold front offshore. This results in 8-12 from Stevenson to Arlington to start the day. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 14-17 in the eastern Gorge with 8-12 in the west. It’s possible the wind will bump up to 18-22 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 61F.
A very strong cold front swings through on Saturday morning. Very strong offshore high pressure builds in behind. The operational GFS calls for 27-31 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. Ensembles are still not quite in agreement, but they’re generally calling for the same. It’s highly likely, given the strength of the offshore pressure, that reality will beat the models. Don’t leave your small gear at home. High temp forecast is 56F for Hood River and 60F for Arlington, so consider a warmer wetsuit than you’ve been using for the last three months! Enjoy the next four days!

Cycling
Please help the HRATS out: sign up to volunteer for the Post Canyon Enduro the weekend of the 15th. HRATS receives money from the event organizers, and that money goes towards building and repairing trails. SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!
