Gorge Wind Forecast

The wind beat the forecasts by a couple miles per hour yesterday afternoon, getting a few extra people out on the water. That was good to see! Today’s bringing a little less in the way of a marine layer and signs from the GFS that the wind will shut down in the afternoon. I dunno. I think the wind east of The Dalles will go calm or near-calm this afternoon. For the Viento to Swell area, I think we’ll see 15-18 early morning, 18-21 mid-morning, and 15-18 in the afternoon. The Hood River and Cascade Locks regions should join in by midday. Mosier and the Rowena stretch of the river are probably going to see 14-17 this afternoon.

Friday’s high temp forecast is 10 degrees cooler than today’s. We’ll also have a weak cold front passing by to the north and a solid low-level atmospheric cap. The day should start off with 22-26+ from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 further east. Cascade Locks will likely be in the clouds on Friday morning, for a 10-13 or less start to the day. It’s likely that this weather system will impact the wind quality. That said, I think we’ll end up with gusty, somewhat inconsistent 26-30 from Stevenson to Rufus on Friday with 23-26 near Roosevelt.

Saturday sees a more stable setup in the morning, but a low pressure system will approach the coast in the afternoon. That will impact wind strength and quality. We’ll have 20-24 from Viento to Hood River in the morning with 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. The morning session is almost certain to be more consistent and reliable.

That offshore low will move inland into Washington on Sunday afternoon. Although this isn’t an ideal setup by any means, we’ll still have a windy day. As of right now, I’m thinking 21-24 in the morning and gusty 25-29 in the afternoon. Monday currently looks like a more stable setup with more reliable 25-29ish.

Kikteboard for Cancer and Camp Koru Need You!

Kiteboard for Cancer happens July 14th through 16th at Hood River’s Event Site. They are still looking for a few volunteers. If you have some time, sign up now. If time is difficult to come by, make a donation to support camps for young adult survivors of cancer. I donated already. Your turn!

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

Jones Thursday: 24-27. Friday: 15-18. Saturday: 24-27. Sauvie’s Thursday: 11-14. Friday: 11-14. Saturday: 15-18. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: 10-15/10-15/10-15, W swell 3′ @ 8 seconds. Friday: 10-15/10-15/25-30, W 3′ @ 8. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, SW swell 2′ @ 19 seconds – that should be interesting! Sunday also looks windy on the south coast.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s a lovely Thursday morning, isn’t it? I’m super tired and overtrained and have a lot on my mind, but I’m still delighted by the blue sky, sunshine, cool breeze and view of Mt. Adams. This is one of the huge benefits of meditation – the capacity for awareness develops to the extent that it’s possible to hold many emotions at once without being overwhelmed by any one of them. This can make pain (or exhaustion) just a little less painful.

This isn’t about bringing up an intellectual thought of “yes, but” or “at least…”. It’s merely noticing that there’s something pleasant happening alongside the unpleasant. Noticing this gives the nervous system a little break from the dominant emotion of the moment.

If you want to try this, you don’t have to find something big. The pleasant could be as sublime as a sunbeam on your bare skin, a cool breeze ruffling the hairs on your arms, a relaxed muscle, the feeling of your feet on the ground… the possibilities are endless.

Looking for a breath of fresh air within yourself will give you more capacity to tolerate yourself when times get rough and there aren’t loved ones around to give you a hug or an understanding look. Notice your complexity, and you’ll find yourself with more capacity. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I did a little Strava research this morning, and it appears that Gunsight Ridge is open. Three people rode it on July 3rd, and at least one of them set a blazing-fast PR. Now, this is no guarantee that Gunsight is open, but it’s a good sign. We’ll send Viggers™ to check it out!

Upcoming Events

If you want to take advantage of that wind, head to the Cascade Locks Marina tonight for $5 community sailing and a BBQ. Honestly, that seems like a great deal to me, and if I didn’t have school tonight, I’d check it out. There’s a community whitewater paddle on the Lower White Salmon tonight at 5:45 – meet at Husum across from Wet Planet. At 5:30 tonight, the race-pace Post n’ Pint ride and the no-drop women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike rides take off from Dirty Fingers. There’s community yoga at 6 tonight at Samadhi in White Salmon and free Tai Chi at 6:30 at Our Savior Church in Bingen.

The Laser Masters Sailboat Championships take place in Cascade Locks Friday through Sunday, and Windance has a free kite, board and foil demo at the Hood River spit Saturday and Sunday. Looks like we’ll have plenty of wind for both. Big Winds has a Faraday E-Bike demo from 12 to 5 on Saturday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
