Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

I got back from retreat yesterday and immediately had to hit the water. Holy heck was it hot and muggy! And guess what? This pattern, with even more heat, continues through at least Saturday and possibly Sunday. Wind will be light to moderate (westerlies) through Saturday with stronger wind possible Sunday afternoon and nearly certain to start next week.

Let’s look at Thursday. It’s warm and sticky and not all that windy to start the day, and warm, sticky, and not-all-that-windy it shall remain. Early gradients were .08 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc) with light wind everywhere except overperforming Viento. We’ll be right on the edge today for wind as temps equalize between the metro area and Hood River. Desert: 10 degrees hotter, just enough for thermals. Models suggest gradients fade through the morning leaving us with 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell with 7-10 in Hood River through early afternoon. Afternoon thermals could give us just enough nudge for foil sports and big kites/sails; let’s go with 12-16 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-14 from Lyle to Doug’s. River flow readings are 156-166kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 101F and muggy.

Your hope for wind on Friday again rests on those thermals. Early westerlies will be 7-10 from Stevenson to Swell. There’s a chance of 13-16 early to mid morning from Stevenson to Hood River. Get it quickly because the wind falls to 11-14 or less by late morning. In the mid-afternoon period, a weak impulse slides through and could combine with extreme desert heat for a period of 16-19 from Hood River (maybe) or Mosier (more likely) to Avery. Instability could disrupt this. High temp: 103F and very muggy.

Saturday starts calm, pick up to just 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River, and holds. High temp: 102F. Super muggy early. Not too bad in the afternoon. Sunday’s all about the timing, and often the timing happens later than predicted when we see this setup. Currently we have models dragging in cooler air along the west side in the afternoon for 25-29 late in the day. Last time we had a forecast like this, the cooler air was much delayed. So, don’t count on Sunday. Just cross your fingers. Monday and Tuesday look quite windy and cooler. Westerlies and seasonable temps are likely next week, but the details aren’t clear. Stay cool out there!

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast

Coast forecast (north/central/south, waves). Swell forecast provided by NWS. Wind direction northerly unless otherwise noted. Thursday: 10-15/10-15/25-30, NW swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Friday: 10-15/10-15/20-25+, NW 4′ @ 9. Saturday: 10-15/5-10/10ish, NW 3′ @ 8. Jones Thursday: 20-23. Friday: 17-209. Saturday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Thursday: 12-15+. Friday: 11-14, increasing around sunset. Saturday: 15-18. NOTE: the coast will be much, much cooler than the Gorge and a much nicer place to spend the next few days, even if there’s not enough wind for windsports.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
