Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather continues for the next several days, meaning we’ll be looking at gusty and unreliable wind, at best. For Thursday, we have a deep low well offshore and surface-based instability inland this afternoon. The wind will stay light through early afternoon. As an impulse moves inland this afternoon, we could see westerlies pick up to gusty 13-16 from Viento to The Dalles (less than 10 in Stevenson) from 2-5 and then east to Arlington after 5pm. Don’t bet on this happening; models are probably overplaying this, and thunderstorms could ruin it. High temp: 80F and muggy.

Friday sees low pressure offshore and another, stronger compact low approaching. Intermittent showers will be present all day. Despite that, we’ll have some onshore flow… Expect 8-12 early from Stevenson to Doug’s with 15-18 east of The Dalles to Threemile. Rain could knock the wind speed down at times. Later in the day, there’s a chance of gusty 20-25 east of The Dalles to Arlington (8-11 western Gorge) but that’s far from guaranteed thanks to instability and random drizzle. High temp: 69F and muggy.

That deeper low approaches the coast on Saturday and sends rain into the Gorge for most of the day. As of this morning, the wind will be basically calm all day with light westerlies, less than 10mph, possible in the afternoon. High temp: 70. Models hint at a frontal system on Sunday combined with weak and transient offshore high pressure. That’s a slightly better setup and could drive westerlies in the upper teens to low-mid 20’s. Again, what wind we do have will be gusty, unreliable, and likely to underperform the models.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
