Thursday. More summer!!!

2015-03-31_11-33-25 M=C-Edit-2
We have very light wind this morning with a bit of a west gradient: .04 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). There’s not much happening in the atmosphere today, but we will see the wind pick up a bit this afternoon. We’ll see 13-16 after 2pm from Stevenson to Arlington with 20-23 possible in the Lyle to Doug’s stretch of the Columbia. As an upper level low sits off the coast on Friday, we’ll see the wind die off in the Gorge. Friday starts off light and glassy. In the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to E 9-12 or so from Hood River east to Arlington. The western Gorge, in an interesting twist, will likely just see east 5-9. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Everything changes on Friday night into Saturday as a trough of low pressure or an upper level low moves inland, bringing in a deep marine push and a high temp drop of 15 degrees. Our best case scenario in this kind of setup is strong high pressure off the coast. We won’t have that piece of the puzzle on Saturday, but you can still expect relatively strong, if a bit gusty, west wind. We’ll start the day with 15-18 from Hood River to The Dalles. The wind will slowly pick up during the day Saturday, maxing out at 25-29 near Rowena. In an interesting twist, the larger-scale model is showing the wind reaching all the way to Arlington, but the micro-scale model suggests it will only extend to The Dalles. Guess we’re in a wait and see pattern, eh?

Looking at Sunday, high pressure builds off the coast and a trough of low pressure remains inland. It’s a tricky forecast, because the gradients will be there, but the gradients will be accompanied with significant rain, assuming the precip model is correct. That said, the wind model is calling for 30-35 on Sunday. Monday looks better, as low pressure thingie moves east and the rain ends. Monday’s models currently predict 30+.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

Jones today: 5-10. Jones Friday: 21-24. Jones Saturday: 7-11. Sauvie’s today: 10-13 after 5pm. Sauvie’s tomorrow: 13-16 after 5pm. Sauvie’s on Saturday: no, probably not. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Timberline, as always, is open every day. Meadows’ final day of the season is Saturday, with a season-ending party on the deck. The weather currently looks cloudy with a chance of sprinkles for Saturday.

Random Morning Thoughts

My cat does this crazy thing – in the morning when she’s hungry, she jumps on me, purrs loudly, and lies on my head. I’ve never responded to this with food, just lots of cuddles, but it’s clear she’s after food. She usually gives up and goes away after a few minutes, a real bummer for me, because I enjoy having the warm, furry kitty on my head.

I got to wondering this morning why she does this, when she doesn’t get what she wants. It occurred to me that maybe this act of lying on the owner’s head resulted in breakfast in her previous homes. Naturally, she’s trying it with me.

We humans do this too. As children, we learn that certain behaviors work to get our needs met. Those needs can include attention, love, food, or any number of other things. Once those patterns are set in us, we continue to use the same behaviors throughout our lives. If throwing tantrums was the only way we were noticed as children, we continue to throw tantrums as adults.

The best way to combat this is awareness. My cat, luckily for me, isn’t making the connection that morning cuddling doesn’t result in food. You, possibly, aren’t making the connection that behaviors you learned as a child are no longer the best behaviors for an adult. But by studying situations where you get all riled up, you can learn where you’re functioning out of the past. And then you can change yourself going forward into the future. It ain’t easy, but it’ll make your world even more awesome. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

First off, there’s a mountain bike race happening in Hood River the weekend of the 21st and 22nd. Our local trails organization has agreed to provide the volunteers, and in exchange, the race organizers are offering up $8000 for our trails. So, we need volunteers! Sign up here, now. Looking to ride? Get the complete list of open trails here. Hood River County has a work party on the 160 trail on Saturday. Meet at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9am.

In raod biking news, today looks nice, but the westerlies will pick up this afternoon and so will the heat. Ride early. Tomorrow looks hot, muggy, and calm, another nice day for a morning ride. Saturday, Sunday and Monday look way, way too windy for road biking.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickleball at 5:15 at May Stree elementary, the race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, Community Yoga at Samadhi at 6, Tai Chi at Our Saviour Church in Bingen and 6:30 and Zumba at the Parkdale Community center at 6:30. Coming up on Saturday, there’s the PSU invite sailboat race in Cascade Locks, the Stevenson to Carson Ridge Run, a work party on the 160 trail, and a stargazing party at Rooster Rock. Sunday is the annual Dog River Super D mountain bike race. Dog River is clear of snow and trees, but Knebal Springs and 8 Mile trails could use some of you to go toss logs off the trails.

Have an awesome day today!
