Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi, friends! A couple days of easterlies give way to a day of westerlies and then multiple days of easterlies. It’s the windiest week of the year! Thursday kicks off with pressures of 30.03/30.10/30.13 for east gradients of 0.07/0.03. Expect 20-25 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson all day with 15ish at Viento. High temp: 51F under sunny sky. Because sunshine matters.

Friday will be windy. Expect Iwash to start at 35-40 and finish at 30-35. Stevenson starts at 30-35 and finishes at 25-30. Viento: 20 to start. 15 to finish. High temp: 49F. Head to the windy areas to find sunshine and escape the Nothing cloud.

Saturday starts with E 35-40 near Iwash and drops to 15-20 in the afternoon before rapidly switching to W 20-25 after 4pm (ish). Stevenson: 25 going to 15 turning to W 20-25. Those westerlies will probably be too late to take advantage of them, but the timing still could change. High temp: 50F under high overcast sky.

A cold front swings through late Saturday or early Sunday. A low pressure system moves into BC on Sunday midday, and high pressure (briefly) builds off the Oregon coast. All the pieces are in place for an eastern Gorge west wind day Sunday. Looking at the ensembles, there’s still a fair bit of disagreement on the strength of these westerlies, but the general picture looks better than it did the last few days. As of right now, let’s call it 26-30 from Maryhill to Threemile from mid-morning on through the evening. High temp: 50F under sunny sky in the desert and drizzly weather west of The Dalles. Beyond Sunday: easterlies come roaring back on Monday afternoon and stick around for a couple days. Even deeper into the future: too much uncertainty to make a solid call.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

In a fun twist, models have upped the potential snowfall for Saturday night into Sunday on Mt. Hood. They’ve upped it enough that you’ll want your snow tires mounted on your car if you plan to go over the passes. My fingers are crossed that we get enough for Jason to groom Teacup on Sunday night. Pure Stoke Pepi’s fingers are crossed that the wind dumps enough snow in the leeward bowls for turns on Monday morning. After that round of snowfall, there’s not much in the forecast for the following week.

For Thursday, all we get is sunshine and relatively warm temps. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000-10,000′ for the 24 hour period. Wind will be light SW this morning, WSW 10-20 this afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight. Friday will be clear all day. High clouds arrive overnight. The FAF will be 9500′ in the morning and will fall to 8500′ in the afternoon. Wind: SW 5-15 all day long.

Saturday looks much more interesting. A strong cold front arrives in the afternoon and slams into Mt. Hood. It starts by dumping rain, but then it switches to dumping snow. The snow level will be 8500′ in the morning, and 7000′ when the precipitation arrives. Sometime between 4pm and 10pm, the snow level falls below that magical 5000′ line. It’s magical because I say it is! Overnight, the snow level drops to 2000′ or so. Accompanying the overnight snow will be strong wind, and that will lead to orographic enhancement of snowfall. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) arrives before 4pm. Another 0.4” falls as mixed precipitation. Overnight, models currently call for 0.7” WE of snow. That’s 5-7” of increasingly dry snow. Wind will be SW 5-10 early. It ramps up to SW 20-30 in the afternoon and turns to W 45-50 when the front hits. Those strong westerlies stick around all night.

Strong wind continues to pull any and all moisture out of the air on Sunday. The snow level starts around 2000′ and stays there all day before falling to a FAF of 1000′ overnight under clear sky. As of this morning, models suggest we’ll pick up 0.3” to 0.5” WE on Sunday for about 4-6” new snow. Wind will be W 50 in the morning, NW 30-40 in the afternoon, and will turn northerly (speed uncertain, because N wind) overnight. After that, we’re in for a couple dry days, most likely. But if this pans out, there might be just enough snow for cautious exploration, and there will certainly be enough snow to take your pup up to play!
