Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Snowfall on the mountain quickly transitions to rain on Thursday, not switching back to snow until midday Saturday. The best way to put a positive spin on this is to say that it won’t be crowded on the slopes! Joking aside, it does appear that the heaviest rain will fall over the Coast Range, Willamette Valley, and the Cowlitz River Valley. So… on to the pineapple express forecast!

Heavy snowfall on Thursday morning quickly transitions to rain as Mt. Hood taps into a warm and powerful jet of air from across the Pacific. 5000′ temps climb into the upper 30’s, and rainfall rates increase with the aid of strong SW wind. The snow level starts at 4000′ or so, rises to 6000′ in the afternoon, and peaks at 6500′ overnight. About 1.7” water value (WV) falls by 4pm. About 0.5-0.7” falls as dense snow, for 3-4” of accumulation. Rainfall by 4pm will be in the 1.0” to 1.3” range. Rain continues overnight, with about 1.0” falling on the slopes. Wind will be WSW 30 in the morning. It’ll turn to SW late morning, rising from 50-70mph at the upper elevations and 40% of that below tree line.

Rain continues on Friday as mountain temps rise from 2-4C in the morning to 4-6C in the afternoon. Models disagree on the exact location of the heaviest rain on Friday, but very strong upper level will add to the totals on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 5500′-6000′ midday, and 6500′ overnight. About 2.0” rain is expected during the day. It appears rain will taper off overnight; just 0.2” is forecast. Wind will be SW 70 in the morning (40% of that below tree line), WSW 45 at all elevations mid-morning, and SW 45-60 (40% of that below tree line) in the afternoon and evening.

Rain continues Saturday morning before switching to snow early afternoon. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 2500′ after midnight. About 0.2” rain falls in the morning. After the switch to snow, about 0.4” WV falls, for 3-4” of accumulation. Wind will be SW 60-70 up high (40% of that down low) in the morning. By the afternoon, the wind will fade to 20-30. Overnight, we’ll see a switch to WSW wind at 20mph. A trace of snow falls on Sunday before the weather dries out.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind continues along with heavy rain on Thursday. Expect easterlies at 10-15 in the morning from Rooster to Viento and 20-25 this afternoon. Friday starts with westerlies near Rooster and light easterlies near Stevenson. The wind goes light westerly in the afternoon, probably calm in the central Gorge, with gusty 18-22+ east of The Dalles. Saturday starts with E 20-25 and turns to light westerly in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw a Sprinter Van returning from Syncline Monday with three muddy bikes on the back. Freeze-thaw conditions exist there, and everywhere, and there’s snow and ice right now, so please don’t ride there or you’ll do significant trail damage. Same goes for Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Post. It’s muddy. Please don’t. Go ride your gravel bike or do something else, and leave the trails be for now!

Upcoming Events

There are several Tai Chi classes at the Hood River adult center during the day. In the evening, there’s pickleball at 5 at The Dalles Readiness Center. There’s $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior church in Bingen at 6, and Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-valley elementary. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s also a low-cost yoga class at 4pm on Friday at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.
