Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Atmospheric instability on Thursday makes for a tricky call for wind. In addition, this kind of system can be a prolific lightning producer, meaning being on the water may not be all that safe today. While offshore low pressure will continue southerly upper flow over the next couple of days, less instability will be present; gusty westerlies continue through the weekend.

For Thursday, atmospheric instability sticks around for much of the day. River-level wind will be inconsistent and up-and-down in response. That said, early gradients of .08 and .03 indicate there’s enough pressure difference in the area to fire up some westerlies… if the lightning currently over the western half of the state doesn’t migrate here. So. Expect gusty westerlies at 15-18 from Viento to Mosier early with similar conditions farther east. And by gusty, I mean really up and down. Afternoon wind forecasts indicate gusty, up-and-down, possibly lightning-enhanced westerlies at 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 12-15 near Rufus. If this system moves through early enough, there’s a chance of gusty 25-28 from Rowena to Avery late afternoon. River flow is 88,600 and temps is 70 degrees.

Marine air pushes in from the west on Friday morning and a cold front approaches the coast in the afternoon. In between those two lies a decent period of relatively steady wind. Morning westerlies kick off with gusty 23-26 from Viento to Moiser with 15-18 east of there and 12-15 near Stevenson. Afternoon backs off a bit in response to a low approaching the coast. Gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles is the call from late morning on. East of there: 10-13.

That front moves through on Saturday morning. If it’s early enough, it won’t affect the wind quality during the day. For now, let’s call it 12-15 everywhere early. 19-23 from Moiser to Roosevelt in the afternoon with 10-14 in the west. Sunday’s forecast currently calls for gusty 22-25 from Mosier eastward. There’s a good chance, given all the lows circulating off the coast and accompanying fronts swinging inland, that this forecast could change, and the wind will be gusty.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Thursday: S10-15/S10-15/S10-15, NW swell 3′ at 8 seconds. Friday: S5-10/LTW/LTW, W 2′ @ 9. Saturday: S10-15/S10-15/S5-10, W 3′ @ 15.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Elevated thunderheads hang around for much of Thursday with lightning possible for much of the day. Rain is possible, but unlikely at river level. Better chances the higher you go. Temps will be in the low 70’s early and low 80’s later. Muggy as all get up. Moderate westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday starts with low marine clouds and then turns sunny. Temps will be near 60 early and in the low 80’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy early and then sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and mid 80’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

New report: chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest! Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
