Thursday. Lighter wind = happier road bikers.

DSC_2599
I was all set to have this forecast out super early this morning. Then I got thinking about how the wind is dying off these few days, but isn’t going to go away completely. That got me thinking about how tough the Gorge is; you know, you just can’t put the Gorge in a corner. And that led to me to IMDB to check my Dirty Dancing quotes, and that lead to looking at quotes from the movie Parenthood, and then… well, we’re a paragraph in and you have nothing about the wind yet. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Anyway, you can’t put the Gorge in a corner; we have a light breeze on the river this morning with a .04 gradient. Without much support on the synoptic scale or marine clouds in Portland, we won’t see much more than 5-10 for much of the day today. However, we will see 10-13 late in the day, by 5pm, from Stevenson to Mosier, and possibly out near Lyle and Rowena too. River water temp, before I forget, is 61 degrees.

Tomorrow starts off with westerly ripples on the river and stays that way until noon. Models suggest a bit of a weak weather system will wiggle across the Northwest in the afternoon, or at least wriggle its way onshore. That will kick the wind up to gusty 13-16 by noon and 21-24, maybe 23-26 if we’re really lucky, from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm. Your best bet for steady, lasting wind tomorrow will be Stevenson.

Saturday looks rather static, as far as the big picture goes, and that’s a good thing. We’ll start with westerlies at 12-15 near Hood River. The wind will pick up to 17-20 midday and 22-25 or a touch more in the afternoon. Strongest wind on Saturday will be near Hood River and Mosier early and from Hood River to Rufus in the afternoon. Sunday starts light and picks up to gusty 13-16.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m not a believer in random coincidence. I also don’t believe the universe is conspiring to make things happen. What I do believe is that our minds notice things that are important to us. When multiple important things happen at the same time, or around the same time, we take notice.

We can ignore or dismiss coincidence, but I believe we are doing a disservice to ourselves when we do. I’d encourage you to examine serendipitous events with a little curiosity. Ask yourself why you are noticing these things. What is it about them that caught your attention? Do you want to spend more time with the people involved? Do you want to learn more about the topics involved? Is there something in your life that relates, and that you want to consider changing?

The universe may not be out to teach us a lesson when random events happen in synchronicity, but we can take our surprise and use it to inspire our learning. Serendipity: it’s not just for fun and ironic appreciation any more!

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m not sure what to tell you in biking news world at this point. All the local mountain bike trails are now open. If you’re from out of town, a gentle reminder: the Kleeway is a ONE-WAY downhill trail. Don’t ride up it. And don’t ride down Seven Streams – we built the Kleeway to separate traffic for safety reasons. The Kleeway radness is there to protect you, so go ride it and have fun! In road biking news, the next few mornings look great, so get out and enjoy the sunny weather and light wind.
