Thursday. It’s SUMMER!

The weather on Mt. Hood today, Thursday, will be more like spring than the weather in the valley. What do I mean by that? Well, normal temps for this time of year are in the 60’s or so, and that’s what the mountain will see. The valley, on the other hand, will be immersed in…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

As of right now, the next chance for precipitation is a slight one, with a few sprinkles possible Monday. If that doesn’t happen, you can look to Tuesday evening for a shot of precipitation on Mt. Hood. Unfortunately, it looks like that precipitation will fall in the form of rain, not snow. Come to think of it… rain isn’t really a problem at this point. When it falls on a spring snowpack, it does nothing to change the quality of said snowpack. Granular snow remains granular snow with the addition of rain, and therefore will still be good skiing. So, don’t dis the spring rain!

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have a nice stretch of wind coming up for you poleboarders, tangleboarders, and downwind paddler people. Keep in mind that the river temp is currently 49 degrees. The river flow at The Dalles is 223kcfs, which I would classify as “moderate”. Okay, so on to the wind… You can expect easterlies at 35-45 at Rooster this morning with 25-30 at Stevenson. The easterlies will fade to 20-25 at Rooster this afternoon with a corresponding drop at Stevenson.

Friday starts out with lingering east wind at 20-25 at Rooster and 10-15 at Stevenson. The wind will fade to nothing by midday. As marine air starts to push into western Oregon in the afternoon, the westerlies will pick up to 13-16 or more (depends on the timing of the marine push, notoriously difficult to get exact) from Stevenson to Hood River. As marine air gains traction overnight and warm air stays in the desert, gradients will increase dramatically.

Saturday looks quite interesting. As of right now, we’re looking at Dawn Patrol at 26-30+ from Viento to Mosier. This is absolutely the most Classic Gorge Setup of setups. Nothing moving around, high pressure in the Pacific, heat low in the desert, 14 degree drop in predicted high temps. It’s worth clearing your Saturday if you like strong wind. Gradients currently look strongest right off the bat, but models still predict 26-30 all day long from Viento to The Dalles, likely filling in at Stevenson and Maryhill in the afternoon. Figures that I have an all-day training in Portland that starts at 9am. Oh well. You’ll just have to get out on the water for me!

Sunday looks like W 16-19 early and W 22-25 in the afternoon. Monday is looking like a gustier version of Saturday’s nukefest.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about the exercise of power. Each of us has a level of inherent power, which may be high or low. Part of our power rests in whether our voices can be heard or not. The opposite view of this is that we exercise power responsibly by allowing those around us to have a voice, to speak their opinions.

Sure, it can be uncomfortable to let those around us express opinions different than those we hold. When we listen, we can feel threatened, frustrated, angry, helpless and fearful. Sometimes we react by refusing to listen to others, by shutting them down, or by judging them. That is an unhelpful and harmful way of being in the world. Why?

When we take away a person’s voice, we oppress. And this is fundamental oppression – when a person doesn’t have money or influence, all they have is their voice. Shutting that down is the ultimate in taking power over someone.

Notice if you are doing this when people speak up around you. No, it’s not fun to listen to opinions that contradict yours, especially when those opinions feel like an attack against you or things you hold near and dear. It can feel easier to stop a conversation, rather than sit in your uncomfortable reactions. Discomfort, it’s important to remember, leads to growth. Be curious about the opinions of others, let them speak, and be curious about your own discomfort. Be wary of your reactions and interpretations, and be open to checking them out, rather than making judgments and assumptions.

There’s a lot to learn about yourself and others from interacting with people who challenge you and your beliefs. Let people speak – let them have their voice, because sometimes voice is all people have. When you allow someone to speak, you are giving them a priceless gift. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s going to be amazing dirt everywhere you look today: Post, Hospital, Whoopdee, Syncline, Kitchen Sink, Gorge 400 and Nestor. No, I do not know if all the snow is gone from the top of Nestor – it is Viggers’ job to test that one out for us. In road biking news, you’ll be facing the east winds today, so adjust your riding accordingly. Friday looks like an excellent road biking day, especially if you get out before the west wind arrives around 2pm. Both days this weekend look quite west-windy, so keep that in mind when planning your rides. Remember that there is a work party in Post Canyon at 9am on Sunday. Meet at Family Man.

Upcoming Events

Today is Thursday, and you have the following events tonight: Pickleball at the May Street Elementary gym at 5:15, community yoga at Samadhi at 6pm, community Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm, and community Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. Friday morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run, 4.1 miles of jogging that will earn you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Looking ahead to the weekend, the HRATS have a trail work party at 9am at Family Man on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
