Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It was a rather wild start to ski season what with all the rain and all the snow and all the rain and the cold and… we’re headed into a four day stretch of completely copacetic weather. Temps will be neither too hot nor to cold. Wind speeds shouldn’t affect lifts. The sun will come out. The only downside to this is that we’re likely to see granular snow conditions that may not see enough heat to soften. Just in case, sharpen your edges. Skaters, the elusive reverse-tilled frozen granular may be headed your way…
A mostly dry Wednesday night gives way to a mostly dry Thursday. The snow level will be 6500′ Wednesday night and will fall to 5000′-5500′ Thursday morning. Overnight into Friday, it falls to 3000′. A trace of mixed precip is possible Thursday afternoon into the evening. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, S 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 overnight.
Partly cloudy to mostly clear sky is forecast on Friday. High clouds move in overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 3000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Expect frozen granular conditions on the slopes with a chance of corn in sun-warmed areas. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.
Saturday looks high overcast to start and clear in the afternoon and night. The FAF will be 2000′ in the morning and 3000′ from early afternoon on through the night. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and E 5-10 overnight. Sunday looks clear with east wind and the freezing level around 3000′. Models disagree on the weather for Monday, so we’ll leave it here for now. There is a chance of precipitation coming from the south, but some models keep the incoming system too far offshore for precip on Mt. Hood. As I said, uncertainty. Enjoy the sunny days on the mountain!

Cycling
Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
