Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s Thursday, and it’s going to be a hot and sunny day in the Gorge. It’s also quite a tricky wind forecast – more talk about that below. The next several days, Friday through Monday at least, bring stronger and more certain westerlies.

For today, the morning gradient was just .02 from Portland to The Dalles. Models predict slightly warmer temps in the desert than the city today and offshore high pressure. That combo may be just enough to eek out some afternoon westerlies at 11-14. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s no wind at all. If it does blow today, chalk it up as a bonus session. River flow is 129kcfs and temp is 68 degrees.

Friday starts out with light and variable or light west wind at less than 5mph. A low pressure system moving into BC will kick off afternoon westerlies. Here’s the day: westerlies rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier by noon. The wind slowly builds after that, picking up to gusty 24-27 late in the day (after 5pm) from Stevenson out to Roosevelt.

A front associated with that system swings through on Saturday morning, dragging in low clouds and ending with mid-level partly cloudiness. This setup is far from ideal for the western Gorge, but areas east of Hood River will pull off a decent day. Morning wind starts with 8-11 in the west and 13-16 east of Mosier. The wind builds quickly, by late morning or so, to gusty 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus and gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Hood River. Sunday’s forecast looks like 15-18 and Monday looks like 24-27.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

The Hood River County fair in Odell and the Hood Jam kiteboarding contest (the window anyway, not enough wind for that today!) at Hood River’s Spit continue today. Other fun stuff includes a by-donation yoga class at Flow at 8 this morning and a $5 yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon tonight. Family mountain biking happens at Post Canyon’s Family Man this evening – kids, bikes and snacks – what could be better? There’s free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6 tonight.

The Hood Jam kiteboarding event continues at the Spit all week. This weekend’s the Wy’East Howl ultramarthon based at Meadows, and Sunday’s the peak of the Delta Aquarids meteor showers. Cascade Locks has sailboat races all weekend. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout is Saturday. The Laser Gorge Blowout (little boats!) is Friday. The Hood River County Fair runs Wednesday through Saturday.
