The weather has turned very springlike, and in terms of weather, that means we’ll see an upper level low sitting right over the top of the Pacific Northwest for a few days. Various weather systems will move through during this time period, making the wind a bit unreliable and tricky to forecast. That said, you will most definitely be able to find periods of wind over the next few days. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
This morning is starting off with light gradients of .04 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) with wind in the 5-10 range on the water. It looks like the wind will pick up to 13-16 from Viento to Mosier by 11am or so, increasing to gusty 23-26 from Viento to Rufus by early afternoon with Arlington joining in late. Stevenson will likely be in the gusty 18-22 range at the peak. Models do suggest we’ll see a late afternoon period of 25-29 east of Mosier. The tricky piece here is that a pool of cold air overhead may trigger increasing clouds, showers, and possibly thundershowers this afternoon. If that happens, all bets are off on wind speeds.
Looking at Friday, that low pressure system and accompanying upper air cold pool will still be around. We’ll start off with light west wind, even lighter than today, through the whole Gorge. Models insist we’ll see 22-25 in the afternoon from Mosier to Arlington with 12-15 in the western Gorge, but again, we’ll be fighting with possible thundershowers due to afternoon heating.
Donate and keep the forecasts coming
See below for details.
Looking at Saturday, that pesky upper low stays overhead, messing with precise forecasting. That said, you can expect 7-10 in the western Gorge to start the day with 13-16 in the eastern Gorge. Saturday afternoon is looking like 13-16 at Stevenson with gusty 23-26 from Viento to Arlington. That might end up being Rowena to Arlington, but we’ll just have to wait and see at this point.
That low pressure system finally starts to move east on Sunday. High pressure will start to build inland later in the day. That gives us light wind to start with 22-25 in the afternoon. Monday is looking pretty solid, assuming the next predicted low pressure system doesn’t move in too early.
Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Random Morning Thoughts
We’re taking a little break here from the random morning thoughts to give the town of Mosier a shoutout. Hi, Mosier! Mosier would like all of you to know that the town has reopened for business (no, the Twin Tunnels trail isn’t yet open). The exit ramps and on ramps are open. Water is back on. Businesses are open. Best of all, the cherries are ripe, and U-Pick is open for the season. So, get your butt out to Mosier and pick some cherries.
Maybe you don’t know this, but people in other parts of the country pay insane amounts for cherries. If you would like to do something nice for a friend in a far-away place, you can fill up a USPS flat-rate box with U-Pick cherries from Mosier and send them to a friend. Your friend will love you, and you’ll be supporting a town that almost blew up last week due to an oil train derailment.
Speaking of, if you would like to understand a little more about what could have happened to Mosier, or what could happen if, WHEN, another oil train derails in the Gorge (perhaps right in downtown Hood River), please take a look at this video of the Mosier Fire Chief speaking at a briefing. It’s sombering.
And remember, cherries are ripe for picking in Mosier. Get out there and pick some. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
The Twin Tunnels Trail still isn’t open, but I’ll let you know as soon as it is. If you need to get to Mosier via bike, you can break out your gravel grinder and do it via Old Dalles Road. You enjoy that climb, k? In other bike news, this morning and tomorrow morning both look excellent for road biking with partly cloudy sky and light wind. Come to think of it, Saturday morning looks good too.
