Thursday. Heat, humidity, thunderstorms, sunrises and sunsets and nudity on bikes.

This morning’s start isn’t what I’d call spectacular, but it’s still a lovely morning in the Gorge. We’ve got an exciting weekend coming up here, with the Beach Bash and a bizarre wind prediction for Sunday. So, double-check your air conditioning, and get ready for some fun in the Gorge! Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Today starts off with weak westerly gradients of .05 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .20 (eph-dls). That’s not a lot, but it does have the westerlies rippling the river with 5-10 near Hood River and Rowena. Expect 8-11 for much of the day from Stevenson to Mosier, picking up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River this afternoon.

Tomorrow, Friday, looks light and variable all day. Friday, therefore, is a good day for SUP, rowing, swimming, road biking, whitewater kayaking, fishing, tanning, and anything else that’s good when the wind isn’t blowing. Saturday looks like a light east wind day, so ditto for all that.

Sunday looks a bit whackadoodle. We’ll start off with no wind, but models are predicting a shortwave in the afternoon. That’s one of those weather system thingies. That system has the potential to kick off thunderstorms (never mind the heat and humidity), but it also brings the potential for wind. Models are showing west 26-30+ Sunday afternoon. At this point, I’m skeptical, but willing to mention it, especially because I LOVE the idea of sailing my 3.2 in 95 degree muggy weather.

Jones and Sauvie’s Beta Test Forecast: Jones today, 17-20. Jones tomorrow, 17-20. Sauvie’s today: 10-13. Sauvie’s tomorrow: 15-18+. Now we’ll see if I’ve got this one somewhat under control… Jones n’ Sauvie’s for the weekend: not so windy at all.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/30-40, W 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/20\5-30/25-30, W 5′ @ 10. Saturday: 10-15/light/light, W 6′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking about boredom recently and trying to understand it better. I’m not sure what’s really going on with it, but I have two ideas: first, it stems from some need not getting met, and it’s our mind’s way of nudging us to move and fulfill that need. My other suspicion is that boredom arises when we are not moving because, when we are still, things we’ve been repressing or avoiding have the ability to drift to the surface. In that theory, boredom is our mind attempting to run away from looking at uncomfortable feelings or beliefs.

So here’s today’s nudge on boredom: next time you are feeling bored, instead of doing something, still yourself. Look inward and see what’s really going on. Are you sad, lonely, frustrated, anxious, afraid? Maybe you’re joyful. Are your muscles tense? Relaxed? Which muscles?

You might learn some interesting stuff about yourself by doing this, and if nothing else, you will no longer be bored. Your inner processes contain infinite entertainment and wisdom, and if you find that watching them is generating boredom, try looking deeper. That boredom is trying to tell you something, I suspect. Have a lovely day, and may you be fascinated by the world, curious, and in awe for much of the day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Well, here we are again with the Weather-Girl-is-EXCITED section of the forecast. Sorry, but Weather Girl used potty language when she’s excited, so the weather forecast is rated R today. It’s gonna get hot, damned hot, this weekend. Expect a sunny day today with a high near 90. Light west wind. No rainbows.

The s*** hits the fan tomorrow as strong high pressure builds inland, giving us clear sky and the undiluted power of the near-solstice sun. Expect temps in the low 60’s in the morning and low triple digits in the afternoon with increasing humidity late in the day and a chance of thunderstorms. Zero wind. Zero rainbows. 87% chance of a colorful sunset.

Saturday looks yucky. I mean interesting. I don’t want to judge it, but triple digits with high relative humidity sounds unpleasant unless you’re planning to spend the entire day in the water. Even then, it sounds rought. Expect temps Saturday morning to be in the upper 60’s with a high around 103. As a weather system approaches late in the day, we’ll see a solid chance of thunderstorms and a really good chance of a f***ing awesome sunset and a decent chance of a f***ing awesome sunrise on Saturday. Perfect weather for the Portland Naked Bike Ride.

With leftover clouds Saturday night into Sunday morning, the air won’t have a chance to cool. Expect low 70’s to start the day with mid 90’s and high humidity Sunday afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible, and an awesome sunrise and sunset are possible too. Monday looks much like Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

There was something I really wanted to tell you guys about today. Oh, I know what it was. It’s the Portland World Naked Bike Ride, happening this Saturday at 8:55pm, leaving from Colonel Summer Park in Portland. It’s still Pedalpalooza, and there are still all sorts of other clothed bike rides happening in the city.

Other events tomorrow include the Beach Bash kickoff with a concert at the Waterfront Park in the evening. At 7 tomorrow night at Rooster Rock, there’s a song circle sponsored by Oregon State Parks.

Coming up Saturday, the Beach Bash continues at the Event Site with the Big Winds beach party and SUP and windsurfing demos along with live music. With a forecast of 107 degrees, it’s going to be a great day for SUPing.

Have an awesome day today!
