It’s New Year’s Eve on the mountain, and Timberline is running some lifts until 9pm. Meadows has lifts until midnight. Skibowl, always the overachiever, is running lifts until 2am. Wow. That’s a lot of hours of shredding! You can expect clear sky for New Year’s Eve on Mt. Hood with chilly weather. Bundle up! Before I forget: Meadows opened Dallas Bowl, 225 and the Basalts yesterday. That’s not a guarantee they’ll open any of that today, but if you have a beacon, shovel and probe, bring it with you just in case. You cannot hike without those items. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
On to the weather… today on Mt. Hood, we’ll have clear sky all day. The free air freezing level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps somewhere between 10 and 20, depending on where the inversion sets up and if the wind turns northerly enough to give us some downslope heating. Speaking of wind, it could be a bit problematic today, especially at Timberline which takes the brunt of the easterlies. Expect NE 25 this morning, picking up to E 35-40 this afternoon.
Tomorrow looks clear and sunny and very windy. The free air freezing level will be at the surface all day long with 5000′ temps in the mid 20’s. The wind will almost certainly impact the higher lifts and Meadows and possibly many lifts at Timberline. Check both websites before you head up. Easterlies will blow at 45mph in the morning, swinging to ESE 45 in the afternoon.

See below for details.
Saturday looks clear and sunny. The free air freezing level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps in the low 20’s. Expect the wind to be ESE 35 early, backing to SE 15 in the afternoon. Sunday starts off sunny and turns cloudy by midmorning with a few flurries possible during the day. The snow level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps in the upper 20’s. Wind will be SW 20.
The next weather system is currently forecast to hit Sunday night. Temps with this system are borderline, 32-34 degrees at 5000′. So, let’s wait a day or two and see. One thing of concern is that cold air may still be trapped in the Willamette Valley and Gorge when this system hits Monday morning. That could make for freezing rain in the metro area.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Our friendly east wind is starting to pick up as the cold, high pressure air makes itself at home in the eastern reaches of Washington and Oregon. Expect easterlies at 30-40 at Rooster this morning, picking up late this afternoon to 40+. Steven’s Locks will see 30-35 today. Tomorrow and Saturday bring east wind at 50mph at Rooster. Monday looks like E 30-40.
Random Morning Thoughts
Today is New Year’s Eve, and tomorrow will be a new year. This is, of course, an arbitrary distinction we make between one day and the next, but it’s a distinction many people leverage in order to motivate change. Perhaps you’re making a New Year’s resolution this year. Maybe you want to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, meditate daily, try new activities, drink less, make new friends, etc., etc., etc.
When making resolutions, it’s important to understand your motivation. Are you committed to making a change because it’s what your heart truly wants? Or are you listening to a should, must, or societal expectation?
If your resolve to change is true, if it comes from a place of connection to self, you will succeed. For example, if you want to quit smoking because people are badgering you, you’re unlikely to succeed. That’s outside motivation, the same as if you’re trying to lose weight because you think a skinnier you will get more dates. If you decide to quit smoking so you can run faster and jump higher, and those things are deeply important to you, you’ll succeed. If you want to lose weight because having a six-pack is your life’s goal, you’ll succeed.
Resolutions must be about you. They must come from your heart. Your heart knows what is best, and when you tap into it, you’ll have the full force of your mind behind your desires. You will succeed.
As you’re sitting there making resolutions, take a little extra time to check in. Determine why you’re making these resolutions. Understand what you’re hoping to achieve. If it’s not about you, it’s not your resolution. It belongs to someone who wants to change you. Maybe that’s enough if you love the person deeply, but it’s probably not. Find your own motivation, and your resolutions will become reality. Happy New Year’s Eve. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
The Nothing is present this morning, and that’s keeping us much, much warmer than we’d be without it. If today is like yesterday, the Nothing will break up in the afternoon. Expect temps in the low 30’s all day. East wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks a little colder, but honestly, the Nothing could impact that. Nothing overnight, and we see low temps in the upper 20’s. Clear sky and we see low 20’s. Highs tomorrow should be in the upper 20’s under sunny sky. Models suggest Saturday morning will be clear, and if that happens, we’ll see temps down into the teens, maybe even the single digits where the ground is snow-covered. Expect high temps in the 20’s on Saturday with sunshine. Sunday starts out clear and ends up cloudy. It’s possible we’ll see a few flurries Sunday night, but it’s looking likely the precip will stay to the west of us.
That leaves us with a conversation about areas west of us on Sunday night into Monday. If the models are overestimating the warmup, and they likely are given east wind predicted at 30-40, Portland, Troutdale, and Cascade Locks could see freezing rain Sunday night into Monday morning, just in time for the first commute of the New Year. Stay tuned for details.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
When the sun came out yesterday afternoon, I felt compelled to jump on my road bike. It was a lovely day for a ride, and today should be the same. Be careful in the shady areas – they’re icy. Out on the trails, it’s all snow and ice, even on the Gorge 400. I know, you want to ride Syncline because it’s not snowy. Don’t do it – freeze-thaw mud is sensitive, and you’ll do a lot of damage to the trail. Then volunteers will have to come fix what you messed up.
