Thursday: Happy 4th, windy day!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue for at least a few more days. Wind quality and consistency and location will vary, but you’ll be on the water somewhere if that’s what you’re dreaming about.

Thursday brings the sunniest day of the next few, as a weak ridge reduces the extent of the marine layer and brings sun to the metro area this afternoon. Morning gradients of .09 and .03 indicate you’ll likely be relatively close to the Corridor today for the best results. Models say this: morning westerlies at 11-14 in the far east and 7-10 under the clouds and Stevenson. Viento to Mosier starts off with 15-18. High clouds above suggest the river may underperfrom the models today; they’re predicting 23-26 form Stevenson to Avery. That’s likely for a few hours this morning. After that… probably closer to 19-23 from Stevenson to Avery with 11-14 farther east. River flow is 111kcfs. River temp is 65 degrees.

On to Friday. A weak weather system swings through late Thursday into Friday. Deeper marine clouds tag along, setting up a partly cloudy morning in Hood River. Early wind will be gusty 11-14 under the clouds from Stevenson to Hood River. Mosier… better chance of a little bit stronger dawn patrol. Farther east: 7-10 to start the day. Another weak system approaches Friday afternoon resulting in gusty 24-28 from Rowena to Roosevelt with gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier.

Saturday’s clouds may stick around all day in the west. Combine that with desert low pressure and the NE Pacific High for a strong day on the river. Dawn patrol kicks off with 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus. 13-16 east and west of there. Afternoon: 27-31 from Viento (maybe) all the way east to Arlington. With the western Gorge a “maybe” for clearing, you’ll want to find sunshine for the strongest and steadiest wind. Sunday’s forecast has been bouncing around a lot. Currently: 22-26. Enjoy the fun on the river!

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Thursday: NW5/NW10/25-30, SW swell 3′ at 16 seconds. Friday: LTW/NW5/25-30, SW 2′ @ 16. Saturday: W5/W5/20-25, SW 3′ @ 17.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

Today’s the fourth, and that means many of our weekly events are off the books. Dirty Fingers bikes has a group shuttle ride down Falls Creek Trail today – they’re calling that the Freedom Ride. If you’re out and about watching fireworks tonight, consider walking or driving to reduce traffic. And if you’ve got your own fireworks, do be cautious, as things are dry and there will be wind.

Weekend events include a windsports swap at the Luhr Jensen parking lot in Hood River. Northwave sails will be passing out free coffee and donuts, and there’s a free foiling clinic at 10:30. Saturday’s also a windsurfing race at the Hood River Events Site.
