Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Today’s a day to rest up for tomorrow, and Saturday will be a day to rest up from Friday. Light westerlies are likely to return Sunday and Monday, but it’s going to be pretty marginal. While the Gorge wind forecast is only awesome for Friday, you’ll have more days of wind if you head to the Pistol River area – south coast wind should be 20-25+ Saturday through at least Monday. Just FYI – for the ensembles, we’re looking at Hermiston rather than The Dalles to highlight Friday’s wind – it just isn’t captured unless you look at the desert forecasts.

Thursday morning started off with light and variable wind and very light offshore gradients: 29.96/29.97/29.98. Models suggest easterlies will rise to 15mph at Stevenson and Iwash (Rooster) Rock for a couple hours this morning before the wind turns calm midday. As a weather system approaches early evening, westerlies build. It’s possible we could see 15-18mph after 5pm from Stevenson to Mosier or maybe as far east as Doug’s, but it might not happen before dark. River flow over the last 24 hours was 56-81kcfs, river temp is 66.6F, and high temp forecast is 75 in Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Friday morning starts out with light easterlies and rain, but nukage is expected! As an upper low moves inland just north of the Columbia, westerlies spike. They explode! They nuke! We’ll see a 1-2 hour period of strong, gusty westerlies, 25-35mph, from Stevenson to the Hatch (maybe Hood River, maybe not) mid-morning. Viento could go ballistic! Between Mosier and Doug’s, the wind will be much lighter, most likely. East of The Dalles, westerlies quickly build to 30-35mph.

After the initial burst of wind, areas west of The Dalles likely drop below 15mph thanks to the arrival of drizzle. East of The Dalles, all the way to Hermiston, 30-40mph westerlies are on the schedule. Been waiting for Arlington, Threemile, or Boardman? This is your day! High temps: 61 in Hood River and low 70s in the desert.

Saturday looks light and variable. High temp: 66 in Hood River. Light west wind is forecast Sunday afternoon, probably low teens at best, strongest from Viento to the Hatch. Monday looks a bit stronger, as does Tuesday. I’ll leave it there for now – the uncertainty is rising, and I don’t want to mislead you! My tomorrow is pretty packed, so get some for me!

Good morning, neighbors! All is quiet on the Gorge front today (other than an approaching front), but all hell breaks loose tomorrow. TATAS is issuing a Rubbish Bin Warning for Friday all the way from Stevenson out to the Tri-Cities. If your bin isn’t secure, it’s going east. Also issued: Pick Tomatoes Warning – we’ll get enough rain tonight into tomorrow to split the ripe and blushing ones. Calmer weather returns Saturday and lingers into at least the early part of next week. We’ll have a slow and gentle warming trend into the latter half of next week.

Today’s excitement was all about Glenwood: it was just 35 degrees this morning!!! But wait until Saturday and Sunday morning – much colder temps are possible. Elsewhere today, all that happens is partly to mostly cloudy sky. East wind picks up to 15-20mph near Stevenson, Viento, and Iwash (cock) Rock for a few hours this morning. By midday, the wind goes calm all through the Gorge, which entices everyone out for a stroll to Enjoy The Silence. Highs today: 75 in Stevenson and Hood River, 79 in The Dalles, and 78 in Pasco. Rain arrives around 11pm and pushes all the way to Rowena prior to midnight.

This leaves us with a rainy start to Friday all the way to Arlington’s Triangle. Around sunrise, we’ll have heavy rain in the western Gorge and light rain to The Dalles and also up in the plateaus on the WA side; Goldendale and Centerville – you get wet too! As a low pressures system slides inland mid-morning, we go from light wind to blasting wind, potentially strong enough to take down some trees in the Stevenson-Viento zone and up in the higher-elevation areas. Westerlies will be 25-35mph until midday west of Mosier and 30-35mph east of The Dalles with 20-30mph in between those zones.

Another round of drizzle moves in mid-morning, and the wind drops to 15mph west of The Dalles and builds to 30-40mph between Avery and the Tri-Cities. See what I mean about rubbish bins taking off? Rain tapers off into the evening, and we all should be dry after 5pm. High temps: just 56 in Stevenson, 61 in Hood River, 68 in The Dalles, and 73 in Pasco.

Overnight into Saturday morning, the wind dies off, clouds burn off east of Hood River, and temps plummet. Glenwood is probably going to fall to 32 degrees. Parkdale, Snowden, High Prairie, Centerville, and Goldendale are likely to dip below 37 degrees. Fog/Nothing cloud is a definite possibility as dewpoints will be in the 30-40 range. Rest of Saturday: decreasing clouds, light and variable wind, and highs from 66 to 69.

Another cold morning is forecast on Sunday thanks to clear sky and light wind. With dewpoints even lower, frost is likelier in our coldest zones. Rest of Sunday: light west wind with high temps running 68-72 degrees. Monday looks quite similar to Sunday. Tuesday: also similar, but a weak weather system could bring a few sprinkles overnight into Wednesday. Or maybe not. Looking deeper into the extended forecast, temps hover in the 70-75 range for a while. No clear signs of rain or any other sort of chaos are present. Safe travels. -TATAS
