MT. HOOD WEATHER FORECAST
Hey skiers and snowboarders! Sunny, dry Mt. Hood weather continues on for most of the next week. Forecast-wise, that’s a good thing, cuz I’m headed out on a meditation retreat tomorrow. I’ll see you again next Thursday, when we’ll finally have a pattern change to talk about. While this weekend is going to be sunny and dry, the next weekend should bring us at least a bit of fresh snow! Snow conditions right now: frozen granular and loose granular and maybe some corn. Today’s Nordic wax will be violet, or if you’re really early or staying in the coldest spots, a violet-blue mix. Alpine: wax for temps near and above freezing – it’s warm up there!
Thursday kicks off sunny. High clouds arrive later and filter the sun. In the evening, clouds thicken and thicken and… sadly don’t drop any snow. The 90th percentile of the Euro ensembles gives us 0.3” snow tonight. Another model in that same group gives us exactly 0% chance of picking up an inch or more of snow. Back to the weather – the free air freezing level will be 10,000′ this morning, 8000′ this afternoon, and below 1000′ after midnight as this dry, cold system swings through. Temps today max out in the low 40s at 5000′ (colder down below), and they drop to the low 20s overnight. Wind will be light NW this morning, NW 20-30 this afternoon, and N 10+ after midnight.

Friday will be sunny and cold, although there could be some low clouds to 5500′ or so in the morning. All elevations clear out in the afternoon and leave the slopes sunny and cold. The free air freezing level will be 500-1000′ all day and will drop to 0′ after midnight. Temps hold in the low 20s. Wind: N 10+ in the morning (northerlies are weird), NE 20 in the afternoon, and E 25 overnight.
Saturday will be clear, cold, and breezing. The free air freezing level will be 0-1000′ all day long. Temps bounce around between the low and upper 20s depending on whether the east side cold pool or the west side warmer air is winning. We talked yesterday about the potential impact of Saturday’s wind on Timberline’s ops; models had that wind at E 30 yesterday. Today that forecast is E 25mph, probably not enough to cause problems. Afternoon wind drops to NE 15, and overnight wind will be E 20.
Clear, sunny, near-freezing weather is forecast for Sunday: the free air freezing level hovers around 0′ all day and rises to 8500′ overnight, but temps will be in the 30-34F range all day. Wind: E 20 in the morning, E 15 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. Sunny, above-freezing weather is forecast for at least Monday and Tuesday and potentially Wednesday. Somewhere in that Wednesday-Friday time frame we’ll see a return to more active weather. Finally. It’s been a long dry spell for sure. Have a great week on the slopes! I’ll see you next Thursday.

GORGE WIND FORECAST
Hi friends! Easterlies keep on coming for most of the next week or so, but the strength is looking right on the edge for everyone but the most determined. Thursday kicks off with pressures of 30.59/30.71 for an east gradient of 0.12. The wind will drop fast today, and considering that temps started at 24 degrees… well… there may not be enough time. Iwash started at 40mph and will fade to 15mph by noon or maybe even earlier. Afternoon wind there will be light and variable. Stevenson starts with 20ish mph, fades to 15mph in the same time frame as Iwash, and drops to less than 10mph in the afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 91-151kcfs, river temp is 41.18F, and high temp forecast is 42F.
Friday starts with westerlies at 10-13mph, goes calm midday, and turns around to E 15mph in the afternoon at both Stevenson and Iwash. High temp: 43F and sunny. Saturday will be a bit stronger: Iwash starts with 30-35mph, fades to 25mph around noon, and drops to 15-20mph in the afternoon. Stevenson starts with 15-20mph and fades to 15mph in the afternoon. High temp: 39F and sunny. Sunday looks similar to Saturday. Monday through Wednesday bring easterlies in maybe the 20-30mph range, but that’s subject to shift some as we get closer. I’m off to a retreat tomorrow and probably won’t have time to write a forecast in the morning. I’ll see you next Thursday. In between now and then, have fun, stay warm, and keep an eye on your buddies!

TEMIRA’S AWESOME TRAVEL ADVISORY SERVICE (DETAILED WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE)
Good morning, neighbors! Dry weather continues through, well, through the entire week that I”ll be gone on a meditation retreat. Please do not ask my housesitter for weather forecasts. She has no ability to predict the weather. When I return, we’ll all get together and talk about next weekend’s pattern change. But first…
Let’s check in with Glenwood, the center of the universe. This morning Glenwood has achieved another win, beating Dufur (17F) by two degrees. It’s 15 degrees with a dewpoint of 11F in Glenwood this morning. Congratulations on being fucking cold, once again. Well done!
Next up: the TATAS Executive Order Of The Day. Today, with a flourish of a Uniball Signo Micro 207, I give you… free lunch for all school kids who want it (cost: $537 annually), and also the cancellation of all school lunch debt (yes, this is a thing) and the prohibition of all future school lunch debt. You’re welcome.
Today’s weather: a little different than yesterday, but not a ton different. Sun this morning gives way to high clouds this afternoon (there’s a system coming, but you won’t really notice), and clear sky overnight. Temps max out in the low 40s. With an inversion in place, you can head to the hills (5000′ and up) for a day that starts above freezing and stays that way. Remote workers: jump on the CAT bus and head to the lodge at Meadows for a change in working venue. Easterlies will be 40mph near Iwash (schlong) Rock this morning and light/variable this afternoon. In the hills and elevated areas, the wind picks up out of the NW this afternoon as this not-really-noticeable system approaches.
The only sign of this lackluster system will be some low clouds west of Mosier on Friday morning. By afternoon, we’re back to sunshine. Friday’s wind starts with W 10-15 west of Mosier, goes calm midday, and turns to E 15 west of Hood River in the afternoon. High temps will be in the low 40s. The inversion will be swept away by this system; up in the mountains, temps will be sub-freezing.
Saturday and Sunday both look sunny and cold with morning temps well below freezing. Afternoon temps make it into the upper 30s. Add in easterlies (30-35mph near Iwash and less elsewhere) to complete the picture. To start off next week, we return to an inversion (cold and sunny in the lowlands), but the air should be dry enough to keep the Nothing away. As I said earlier, sometime in the Wednesday-Friday time frame, the overall pattern shifts, and something different will happen. I’m so excited to talk about some changeable weather when I return from retreat. Until I get back, y’all be nice to each other and contemplate what sort of executive orders you would write – only requirement is that they come from your heart, from a place of kindness. And then go out and do some small kind act for someone else. I’ll be expecting a report of all y’all’s kind actions when I return. Go ahead and leave them in the comments on this post. Safe travels. -TATAS
