Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

There’s no new snow to report this morning, and sadly, there’s no news to report on the search for Ryan Mathers, a snowboarder who went missing at Meadows on Tuesday. Give your loved ones a hug, and make time to appreciate them today. If you’re heading to the mountain, you’ll find a variable mix of conditions – temps warmed to near 40F yesterday, so the groom is a mixed bag of hardpack and marbles. Wax warm today – temps are headed for the 50’s, and the snow will turn sticky. This is the last of the warmth – we head back into cool, snowy weather for the extended period. Cross your fingers for today’s operational GFS run. It’s the best of all possible scenarios and brings tons of snow. Other ensemble members bring cold weather and some snow, but not a giant dumping. Either way: winter is not over!

Thursday’s going to be a warm one. Clear sky this morning adds high clouds this afternoon and a deeper overcast tonight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ all day long. No precip. Wind: SW 5-15 during the day, WSW 25-30 overnight, and W 35-40 after midnight.

Friday brings a nice, strong cold front that’s, sadly, lacking in moisture. The snow level will start at 11,000′, but it falls to 3500′ by sunrise, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 500-1000′ overnight. Just 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 1/2” to 1” of new snow. Add another 0.2” to 0.3” WE overnight for 2-3” more. Wind: W 35-40 all day becoming NW 30-40 overnight.

Cool, snowy weather continues on Saturday in chilly NW flow and atmospheric instability. It’s hard to predict snowfall amounts with this setup, but the wind direction and moisture availability look decent. The snow level will be 500-100′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ after midnight. About 0.3” to 0.4” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-5” new. Another 0.5” to 0.7” WE is forecast overnight, for 5-8” more. Wind: NW 30-40 in the morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

We head into a period of uncertainty starting Sunday. The weather will be cool and showery, for sure, and could potentially turn very snowy Sunday afternoon into Monday. Models aren’t in agreement. For now, let’s say the snow level Sunday will be less than 1000′ early, and 2500′ in the afternoon with decent snowfall. Cool, showery, snowpack-buildling weather continues into the first half of next week..

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

In typical spring fashion, we’ll have a back and forth pattern of easterlies and westerlies. Thursday: easterlies. Friday and Saturday: strong westerlies. Sunday: light and variable. Thursday starts with east wind at 40mph at Rooster, and 20-25 at Viento and Stevenson. The wind holds through mid-morning and fades in the afternoon. Rooster lands at 20-25, Stevenson lands at 15-20, and areas east of Viento pick up to 5-10mph. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 69F.

Don’t expect that warm and sunny weather on Friday. A weak cold front swings through and gives us back the westerlies. You’ll wake to 15-20 west of Stevenson, 5-10 in the central Gorge, and 25-29 from The Dalles to Boardman and also near Viento. Midday wind picks up to gusty 27-31 east of The Dalles, and afternoon wind builds to 29-33. It does appear that it will drop a bit after 5pm, so go for the 1-5pm session. High temp: 55F. Saturday starts with 7-10 in the western Gorge and 23-26 from The Dalles to Boardman. Afternoon: 16-19 in the weest and gusty 28-32 out east. High temp: 49F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

Most of the trails are too wet to ride. Those that weren’t have probably experienced freezing temps overnight. Remember the rule: if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing or exposed to the open air now, don’t ride it. You’ll do significant damage. Just wait until tomorrow. It’s not far away! If you ride in the mud, you not only mess up your bike, you do significant damage to the trails. Your brown pow is coming. Go shred the mountain until the trails dry out! Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
