Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like I won’t have time on Friday morning to do a forecast, so this one is for both days. That’s a bummer, because models are in disagreement about the wind strength for the 48 hour period.

For Thursday, we’ll have a trough of low pressure overhead as high pressure starts to build offshore. Weather systems moving through will create an unreliable surface-level wind field. That said, it’ll be windy! In the morning, you can expect 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell with 10-13 or less from Hood River eastward. By 2pm or so, we’ll have gusty 12-15 in the west and 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington. By late afternoon, the wind will pick up to 27-31 from Mosier to Rufus with 30-35 possible (although unlikely) at the Rowena stretch of the river. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow is 438kcfs which would be an awful lot at Rufus!

Friday sees high pressure start to build inland. That combines with a heat low in the desert. Although this is a pretty ideal setup, models are calling for less wind Friday than on Thursday. Anyway, we’ll have to see how it plays out. Friday starts with 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with less than 10 at Stevenson and 12-15 east of Mosier. As the sky clears, the wind will become centralized in the western Gorge with 24-28 from Stevenson to Mosier and 10-13 east of Mosier.

Saturday looks like W 10-13 in the morning and W 5 in the afternoon. Sunday looks like E 10-15. The general picture for next week looks like lots of west wind days.

Random Morning Thoughts

My thoughts are on vacation until I get through my comprehensive exam on Friday!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
