Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a sunny and very warm start to the day on Mt. Hood. Don’t let the 50 degree start fool you – radiational cooling is very good at snapping the snow. Today should be a fine, fine day of corn. Don’t wait too long – it’ll be 50F all day up there! Warm weather continues through Sunday, and then there’s just a bit of snow in the forecast on Monday.

Thursday will be sunny and warm. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be about 10,000′, and temps will be near 50F all day. Wind: NW 10-15 until tonight when it turns to NE 10. Friday looks almost identical. Wind: NE 10 in the morning, SE 20-25 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight. Ditto on Saturday: sunny with the FAF around 11,000′ and temps rising to 50F. Wind: SW 5-15 all day becoming W 15 overnight. It’s worth noting that an inversion will develop starting Friday; temps down low will be lower than temps up high. Another thing worth noting for Nordic skiers: significant tree litter from a recent windstorm.

On to Monday: models currently knock the snow level down to 2500′ to 3000′ and bring 0.2” to 0.5” water equivalent of snow. At those temps, we get a nice 10:1 ratio for 2-5” of new, just enough to refresh the Nordic skiing, but probably not enough to completely convert the alpine slopes to packed powder. After Monday… models hint at a relative dry week. They’re also hinting at a return to wetter weather about 10 days out. Let’s cross our fingers for that. In the meantime: lots of sun to enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around on Thursday, but it’ll be easterlies for the next three days. For Thursday, gradients start at .07 and .07 with 20-23at Viento, 17-20 at Arlington, and light westerlies or light/variable wind elsewhere. The wind will fill in at 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River mid-morning before backing off to 12-15mph in the afternoon. This could extend to Mosier. East of there, you’ll find max wind at 7-10mph. River flow is 145kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 61-65F. Yay.

Easterlies return Thursday night. Friday starts with 30-35 at Rooster, 25-30 at Cascade Locks, and 5-10 from Hood River eastward. The wind picks up to 35-45 in the afternoon at Rooster, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 10-15 from Hood River to the east. High temp: 51F. Saturday kicks off with 35-45 at Rooster, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 5-10 to the east of Hood River. Afternoon wind drops 5-10mph in the western Gorge and picks up to E 10 from Hood River eastward. High temp: 48F. Sunday brings easterlies at 20-25 in the western Gorge.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly Nothing sky this morning gives way to full sun. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Friday will be clear all day. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday will also be sunny. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Ditto on Sunday.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 1500′-2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
