Saturday starts off cloudy and progresses to rainy, followed by a brief burst of snow at the back edge of the weather system. The snow level will be 8000′ through early afternoon, falling to 6000′ by around 10pm and 5500′ by midnight. Most of the moisture will have moved through by then. As of right now, we’re looking at .8-1.0” water value (WV), almost all of which will fall as rain. At best, we’ll get an inch of new at the base of T-line and Meadows. Wind on Saturday will be SW 20-30 for much of the day, swinging to W 25 late in the evening.

Sunday starts off cloudy, but snow will start falling around 10am, continuing through about 4pm. The snow level will be 4000′ early and 3000′ after mid-morning or so. We’ll see around .3” WV for around 3” of new snow, followed by flurries through Monday morning. Wind on Sunday will be SW 20 early and SW 30 in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have some light westerlies in the Gorge this morning ahead of a frontal system this afternoon. At 7am, the gradients were .06 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). We’ll see up-and-down 10-13 everywhere but Stevenson this morning. The wind should pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier late in the morning with 22-25 east of Mosier. Models suggest today’s wind will be gusty and short-lived, so you may want to drive pre-emptively if you want to get on the water.

Tomorrow, Friday, looks light and variable all day. Saturday starts off light and variable and picks up to W 13-16 in the afternoon east of Mosier. Sunday starts off with easterlies at 10-13 and backs off to light and variable wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I woke up late yesterday morning and went to meditation practice after deciding to take a day off. I’m realizing I need to take more days off, and this seems to be the time of year to do it. In light of that, and in light of the fact that I have trainings in Portland Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week, I’m taking the next three days off.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way… I had an interesting conversation with a friend last night about determining blame. Many of us live our lives looking at conflict as a blame game. We try to determine who’s at fault in a given situation. We see conflict as black and white, as the fault belonging in whole to one person or another.

This is a faulty conceptual model. Conflict happens through misunderstanding. Someone does something in an unskillful manner. Someone else interprets in an unskillful manner. Or perhaps both people act skillfully, and still misinterpret the meaning of the interaction.

Each of us contributes to a conflict; Neither of us is at blame for it. There are, of course, some exceptions to this, and that is a part of why we have laws. But that’s a different conversation. Anyway, the next time you’re embroiled in conflict and looking to place blame or take the blame, take a breath instead. See if you can identify your contribution to what’s happening. See if you can identify possible misinterpretations on your part. Let go of the black-and-white blame model and try this one instead. Finally, come together with the other person and discuss these things.

If you’re interested in more about this topic, the book Difficult Conversations explains this better than I ever could. It’s awesome, in other words. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m thinking there’s some pretty awesome dirt out there right now. I have, however, had reports of trees down in the higher Post Canyon trails (no specifics). I also have reports of lots of trees down on 8-Mile, which leaves me wondering about Surveyor’s, Dog, Knebal, etc. Expect trees if you’re out riding, in other words, and bring your Silky Big Boy along to do some removal.

For you road bikers, today looks a touch on the windy side, bu tomorrow looks awesome after the Nothing burns off. Light wind and sunshine. Yeah.
