Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re looking at what the weather folks call a “progressive” pattern for at least the next four days; a series of weather systems will impact the Northwest, leading to up-and-down, gusty, and unreliable wind for the Gorge. We’ll also see some afternoon atmospheric instability, which will further diminish the wind quality. For today, Thursday, expect W 5-10 this morning. As a weather system starts to push through late morning, we’ll see the wind pick up. You’ll find gusty 24-28 from Rowena eastward. That said, models suggest the wind will blow for an hour or two near Hood River, die off, then blow for two or three hours at the eastern beaches as the front moves through. If you’re still planning on it, know that the flow is 428kcfs, way too much for the Rufus stretch of river, and river temp is 54 degrees.

Moving on to Friday, we’ll start with light westerlies as a low pressure system sits off the Oregon coast. Models suggest a short period of 13-16 in the afternoon before the wind backs off to 5-10. Saturday starts out with light westerlies. As an upper level low wanders southward from BC, the wind will pick up. Models suggest gusty 23-26 from Hood River to Arlington after 2pm. Again, this isn’t going to particularly steady or reliable wind. Sunday looks like light west wind early and gusty 15-18 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Each of us has situations we find particularly irritating or annoying. When we find ourselves in those situations, we get angry or frustrated or anxious or any number of things, and then we feel crappy (that’s a therapist word, crappy) because those emotions are unpleasant. While our current reaction to these situations is automatic, we can change it so something else arises automatically. No, really!

For example, it can be really annoying when people show up late for an event with a fixed start time, and a pretty common reaction to this is anger and a thought along the lines of, “That person is so inconsiderate.” Instead of that that, we can choose to replace it with something like, “Oh, they must be having a bad day, and I feel compassionate,” or, “I’m glad they’re here, because I value their presence.” Those are just examples.

My point is that if we do this consistently, we’ll eventually have a different automatic reaction, a reaction with a more pleasant emotional association. Then we’ll feel better! I challenge you to give it a shot. Pick just one situation that’s maybe a 3-6 on the annoyance scale. Not anything more irritating, because it’s good to start easy. Try this. See what happens. You might just find you enjoy, for example, sitting in a traffic jam in the pouring rain with everyone bundled up in their cozy cars around you. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Today’s trail update is a road update: Larch mountain is snow-covered 1 mile from the top. Speaking of snow, ODOT is thinking July for McKenzie Pass. The main road to Lost Lake is open, with snow on the sides. The Rowena Curves will remain closed for at least a couple of weeks while ODOT works to clear rockfall and stabilize the hillside. In trail news, Nestor Peak is open top to bottom.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include a work party at the Augspurger trail, the 5:30 mountain bike shop rides at Dirty Fingers, yoga at Samadhi at 6, and Tai Chi at our Savior church in Bingen at 6:30. Tomorrow morning is the donut and coffee run at Kickstand Coffee at 7am. Coming up Saturday, it’s the Stevenson to Carson Ridge Run (cold and rainy) and a work party in Post Canyon at Family Man on Saturday morning at 9:30. Nine-thirty, not 9 as I’ve been telling you. 9:30.

Have an awesome day today!
