Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Yesterday was an exciting day – as the cold front blasted through, stronger than expected, it drove the wind to 30+ in many locations. A big shoutout goes to the windsport folks who did everything they could to assist in rescuing the fisher folks who ended up in the river. And condolences to the friends and family of the individual still missing. Wind-wise, we’ll have a down day today, moderate westerlies tomorrow, and the potential for stronger westerlies Saturday and Sunday. Models are still uncertain about the strength and location of the weekend wind.

For Thursday, we don’t have much to talk about. I was up super early. The 5am gradients were 30.05/30.01/30.00 and the wind was less than 10mph pretty much everywhere. What you see is what you get. Models do hint at east wind at 10mph for a few hours between Viento and Stevenson late morning, but don’t expect much. After that: calm. River flow site is down again, and the backup doesn’t correlate with the Corps website. River temp is 67.64F, and high temp forecast is 73F.

Friday sees high pressure build offshore. While the GFS only has 0.06 gradient all day, offshore high pressure like this sometimes (but not always) results in stronger wind than expected. Let’s call it 10-13 from Viento to Swell to start with the potential for 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. East of Hood River, the wind stays calm. High temp: 74F.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Saturday looks interesting. Models currently have a brief blast of easterlies near Stevenson and Home Valley early, perhaps 20mph. Those barely last long enough for you to drink coffee. A building offshore high and approaching cool trough combines with heat in the desert to force the wind upwards in the afternoon. We should see at least 23-26 from Stevenson to Hood River early afternoon and Stevenson to Rufus mid to late afternoon. I’m hedging a little here as ensembles aren’t all in, but the deterministic GFS is quite enthusiastic about Saturday afternoon. Fingers crossed.

Extended: Sunday morning also has potential. As of right now, it looks like 21-24+ from Viento to Hood River. Depending on how far inland the high pushes during the day, we could see the wind drop. Again, there’s quite a bit of range in the models. Monday looks like an east wind day, potentially a 30+ mph day. Tuesday: easterlies to start, westerlies later, and too much uncertainty for precision. Beyond that, some models make things hot, and other make it cold. So, no ability to forecast from Wednesday onward. Have a great day today!
