It’s a stormy morning on Mt. Hood, with a stiff westerly breeze driving orographic snowfall. Sounds like there was some rain at some point last night at 5000′, but all the precip fell as snow higher up. It’ll probably be a bit of a mixed bag of conditions, but I bet there are some nice fresh tracks out there too! Anyway, expect orographic snow all day, with the potential for sunbreaks. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ all day. We’ll see .2-.5” water value (WV) between this mornign and 5pm, for 2-5” of new snow (probably the lower end). Then we’ll see another .2-.4” WV tonight, for 2-4” of new snow. Wind today will be W 40 all day long, keeping high-elevation lifts on standby and possibly affecting chair speeds on other lifts. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast
As predicted, we have Dawn Patrol this morning, with mid-twenties east of Hood River and gusty teens in the western Gorge. You can expect 25-29 for most of the day (with a midday lull likely), from the edge of the low clouds all the way to Threemile. Looks like the strongest wind will be this afternoon and early evening from Rowena to Arlington, with 30-35 possible. Given the afternoon combo of offshore high pressure and a departing weather system, the wind will likely be excellent quality from Maryhill to Arlington.
Friday looks like W 10-13 from Stevenson to Arlington in the morning, backing off in the eastern Gorge after noon and staying at 10-13 in the western Gorge all day. Saturday looks light and variable.
Things get quite interesting Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, as we head into an early-season Classic Gorge setup: strong high pressure in the eastern Pacific, a trough along the coast and the Willamette Valley, and low pressure in the desert. Sunday looks like 28-32 in the afternoon, and both Monday and Tuesday show promise for strong westerlies. River water temp is 44 degrees. Today’s flow is 194kcfs at The Dalles, meaning the current will be strong but doable at Maryhill.

Light west wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday brings high overcast sky with rain after midnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Hmm. Looks like we had .6” rain yesterday and have already had .12” of rain today. That’s enough to make Post slick, if not muddy. Maybe it will be better by the afternoon? Syncline, of course, should be good. The only problem there today is the nuking strong wind. It’s not going to be the best day to ride Syncline or to go road biking. That leaves you with Hospital Hill. Tomorrow looks much less windy, and therefore much better for biking both on the road and on the trails. Same goes with Saturday. In other bike news, the Gorge Roubaix race the weekend of April 3rd is still looking for volunteers. Sign up and help keep a good thing going.
Upcoming Events
Coming up today, I have therapy at 10:15. That gets me from going windsurfing today, but I’ll tell you what… I’m pretty stoked to go windsurfing soon! I know, you want to come with me, but you can’t. On Thursday evening, there’s community yoga at Samadhi at 6pm, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30pm, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm. Tomorrow morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run: 4.1 miles that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. During the day tomorrow, there will be fat bike demos at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Have an awesome day today!
