Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning everyone! Hopefully all of you got out for some of the gusty westerlies at Rufus yesterday and followed that up with Indian food from Amayah’s. All I got was the Indian food after work, but that’s better than nothing! We’ll continue with the cool, cloudy, somewhat windy autumn weather for a couple days and then shift into a somewhat more favorable pattern to start next week. That said, there’s quite a bit of range in the models as there’s wont to be in autumn.

Thursday opens with showers in Hood River and pressures of 30.12/30.09/30.07 for gradients of 0.03 and 0.02. Hmm. Not much. That low pressure system offshore is not helping. What will help today? A late nudge from thermal gradients. At best, we’ll have 14-17 from Lyle to Threemile after 2pm. You could try out the gusty westerlies in the rain showers this morning; Viento benefits from this setup and will offer up gusty 14-17 for a few hours. Swell: gusty 10-13. I would be surprised if that lasts throughout the day. You’d be better served waiting for whatever the afternoon dishes up. River flow yesterday was 62-83kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

The offshore low pressure system drifts a bit closer on Friday morning and then wanders south. This turns the wind offshore. You’ll find 20-25 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson much of the day with 15-20 at Viento. After 2pm, the wind drops a bit but still holds at 10-15 near Viento, 15ish near Stevenson, and 15-20 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock. High temp: 61F under cloudy sky.

Say “goodbye” to the offshore low and “hello” to offshore high pressure for Saturday. In the summer, we’d be jumping for joy about this thanks to the cool air on the west and the heat in the desert. The desert will struggle to do its part on Saturday. Expect a calm start. Models hint at 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River in the afternoon, but they’re far from agreeing on this. Similar plans are afoot for Sunday with a bit of a kick from an approaching weak system late in the day. Looking deeper into the uncertain future, we have hope. The operational GFS has 24-27 in the Corridor on Monday morning. Even if most ensemble members aren’t that enthusiastic, they’re still mostly on board with “enough” wind. I have officially cleared my schedule and notified my paddle buddies. Have a great day today! Do something fun outside!

Clouds and showers this morning give way to partly cloudy sky later. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 60’s this afternoon. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday will be cloudy. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise to the low 60’s. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be partial nothing and clear around that becoming clear in the afternoon. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise to the upper 60’s. Calm wind early. Moderate westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows.

The Post Canyon AirJam is September 30th at Extended Play.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. Underwood is also open. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
