Gorge Wind Forecast
Active weather continues for the next several days, but we’ll still see enough wind for you to be on the river doing something. If you’re paddling downwind, it’s going to feel like paddling through mud due to the current. Riverkeeper has updated their Poopy Water report. The Waterfront Park is now testing clean, but the Event Site and Nichols Boat Basin are under Poopy Water Warnings.
Thursday starts with low pressure off the coast. Another low moving into northern Idaho causes enough of a gradient to get you on the water. The wind will be gusty, and it will fade late afternoon. Gradients to start the day were .07 and .06, and westerlies were all over the board thanks to scattered showers. Give it a couple of hours to settle out. By late morning or early afternoon, we should be seeing 8-12 from Stevenson to Mosier or Lyle and gusty 22-25 from Lyle or Avery east to Arlington. After 2pm, the wind drops off to 17-21. River flow is 401-438kcfs (too much for the Rufus stretch), river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is a balmy 69F. Expect clear sky for much of the day with high clouds late.
A low pressure system moves in from Nevada to Idaho on Friday and troughiness persists along the coast. This is a better setup than Thursday, but it still has enough moving pieces to cause gusty conditions. The day starts with 14-18 all through the Gorge from Stevenson to Rufus or maybe Arlington. Drizzle will persist to Hood River through early afternoon. Models are hinting at 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington with 14-17 to the west from late morning on. In the afternoon, there’s a good chance of 27-31 from Mosier to Boardman. West of there, the wind drops to 10-13. A short session of strong, gusty wind is also possible at Swell after the rain stops, but it’s going to be inconsistent. That said, if it does happen, the swell will be fantastic thanks to the river flow. So: best conditions will be out east under the sunshine, but if you can tolerate gusty conditions, you may find opportunities right here in the Corridor. High temp: 68F.
Offshore high pressure builds on Saturday, but a disturbance will also be part of the picture. We’re currently looking at 14-17 to start from Viento to Arlington with 22-25 or perhaps a bit more from Lyle to Rufus or Arlington in the afternoon. That could change. High temp: 66F. Sunday’s forecast is currently for low to mid 20’s, and probably out east rather than near Hood River. That’s a nice stretch of wind. Enjoy it!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Looking at next weekend, we have the Bend Short Track Series race, 12 Hours of Post Canyon, the Alpine Epic Race (Oakridge), the annual summer solstice party at Illumination Saddle, the Pray for Wind Party at Kickstand, the Central Gorge Master Gardeners Tour, the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, and Six Hours of Mt. Hood MTB race.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
