Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Another feisty weather day is on tap, but there’s a decent chance you’ll be able to get on the river at some point. Next chance after today is Saturday afternoon, and that’s not a great chance. Another opportunity presents on Sunday and Monday, although Sunday could be quite wet on the west side. Let’s dive in to the details, shall we?

A cold and unstable weather system is moving east today, but things will stabilize this afternoon. Out in the Pacific, high pressure is building. At 6am, pressures were 30.03/29.93/29.88 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.05. That’s a strong indicator of Mosier-Rufus if nothing changes. Will something change? It just might this afternoon as things stabilize! Until then… For a few hours this morning, expect gusty 15-18ish from Stevenson to Arlington with the potential for gusty 22-25 and rain at Viento. Rain continues west of Hood River through early afternoon, making that section a poor choice for windsports; models suggest the wind will be on a downward trend west of the Hatch from mid-morning on. As the system moves east early afternoon and things stabilize, we should see gusty 20-23 from Viento to Hood River and gusty 22-25 from Lyle to Rufus. 25-28 from Lyle to Rufus seems totally within reason if reality outperforms models today, as I suspect it will. The wind drops off everywhere after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 57-79kcfs, river temp is 63.50F, and high temp forecast is 56F.
High pressure settles inland on Friday. This shuts the wind off. We could see W 5-10mph early in the morning, but conditions should turn calm from mid-morning on, all through the Gorge. High temp: 59F under various sorts of clouds for most of the day.

Similar conditions start the day on Saturday: calm wind, overcast sky from a strong atmospheric river well to the north of us. As that system sags south in the afternoon, westerlies pick up. We’ll see gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Rufus from mid-afternoon on. High temp: 68F under increasingly cloudy sky.

Extended: the atmospheric river slowly slumps southward on Sunday. Its approach sets us up, possibly, with some very gusty westerlies in the 20ish mph range in the afternoon between Viento and Arlington. It’s a pretty big maybe. No bets on this. After that system moves through, we’ll be left with a shot at 20-23 on Monday between Mosier and Rufus. After that? Probably a few days of dry weather with the potential for some easterlies. Have a great day today!
