Thursday. Brown Pow Alert. Sunshine. I see a shuttle day…

Random Morning Thoughts

sunset
I have a lot on my mind this morning, but nothing I really want to share with the world. I guess that’s why we have best friends – so we can share those things that don’t feel appropriate to share in a public forum. But I’m one of those people who thinks it’s a good idea to share my deepest, darkest thoughts with someone. That might not be your approach to life, but I find talking about stuff brings me relief and a sense of connectedness with and support from other people. Try it some time. It’s really scary and really rewarding. Have a nice day. =)

Gorge Wind

We are still stuck in this not-conducive-to-wind pattern, which means there are very happy fishermen, SUPers, scullers and road bikers out there along with a lot of sad wind sports junkies. Expect east wind today, peaking at 21-23 at Rooster and 15-18 at Steven’s locks. Looks like east wind of some sort will last all day, with the wind dropping to 10-13 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with easterlies in the 22-25 range at Rooster with 15-18 at Steven’s Locks. The east wind will fade faster tomorrow than it will today, leaving us with west wind at 5-10 after 2pm.

Saturday and Sunday both look like light wind days, likely light west on Saturday and light and variable on Sunday.

Out on the coast, expect S 20-25+ this afternoon with choppy swell of 10-13′ at 12 seconds. Tomorrow brings strong southerlies at 30-40 with really choppy seas of 17-20′ at 11 seconds. Whoa, Nellie. Expect leftover southerlies on Saturday at 20-25 in the morning and 10-15 in the afternoon with SW swell 10′ at 10 seconds.

Gorge Weather

Although it was dark as I was writing this, I have faith that we’ll see the sun today. Expect a partly cloudy day in the Gorge with the possibility of high clouds moving in later on as a warm front pushes inland. Temps today will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. The snow level will be 6000′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon. No rainbows today, but there were plenty yesterday, so let’s not get greedy.

Tomorrow starts with high clouds and ends with rain after 5pm. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. The snow level will be 10,000 or higher. We don’t tend to see rainbows with warm fronts, so let’s say we have an 8% chance of rainbows tomorrow.

Expect a few lingering showers Saturday morning with sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. The snow level will be above the top of Mt. Hood. Rainbow chances are 78% on Saturday morning. Sunday looks dry and most likely sunny.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog yesterday morning in Pot Canyon near Family Man, and the dirt was perfect. Not muddy. So, I suspect the dirt is perfect there today. There, Whoopdee, Hospital, Syncline, and everywhere else. It’s brown pow season. Get some! The road biking should be okay today too, with light wind and no rain. So get your bike out before biking season goes the way of the dodo.

Don’t forget that we have the FREE IMBA trailbuilding school next Saturday, a must-do for anyone who shows up for trail work parties. If you don’t have all day, just show up for the classroom portion at the Hood River Fire Station in the morning. Sign up now so HRATS knows how many lunches to provide, but if you don’t sign up ahead of time, you’re still welcome to come! On Sunday, there’s a fundraiser for trails happening at the Whoopdee (all day) with music, food, and Trek demos. On the following Saturday, the 25th, there’s a Kleeway fundraiser at Dirty Fingers. Costumes, karaoke, and fundraising for what’s going to be the most awesome (and most safety-promoting) trail in Post Canyon!

River Levels / Fish Counts/Cheezburger Update

The John Day Dam is reading 71-85kcfs. The Dalles Dam is putting out 103kcfs. There are two river-wide logs on the White Salmon: one just below Cave Rapid on the Middle and one below Cave Wave on the Lower. The White Salmon is around 1.7′. Yesterday’s fish counts: Chinook, 1419. Coho, 2013. Steelhead, 299.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

It’s Thursday. There’s pickup touch rugby at Henkle Middle School at 3:30. There’s community yoga, free or by donation, at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon at 6:30. Tomorrow is the first day of Harvest Fest in Hood River, meaning you will be able to eat pie and apples and pears until you explode.

This weekend is the big mountain bike festival, BikeToberFest, with the IMBA Trail Care Crew in town on Saturday for the free trailbuilding school (see biking section) and a fundraiser for HRATS at the Whoopdee on Sunday with free Trek demos.

On Saturday afternoon, it’s the Vampires and Victims 5k/2k at Hood River Valley High. Show up in costume (or not) and be assigned to the vampire or victim crowd. All proceeds benefit the anti-concussion program. Headlamps are required, so don’t forget yours!

Have an awesome day today!
